Pineapples from Seed!!

Vancouver, Canada(Zone 8b)

I chopped up and ate a pineapple tonight, saving the top to grow (I've had much luck growing the top and am starting this new one for a friend) and I found about 15 small black pineapple seeds in the flesh of the fruit! A friend of mine successfully sprouted pineapples from seeds she pulled out of a pineapple before, so I know it can be done, I'm just not sure exactly what the best method is, can anyone help me out? Is there anything special I should know about sprouting bromeliads? Thank you!!!

I have a pineapple top saved from today and would love some advice on growing it. Will it ever bear fruit and how long does it usually take?

Thanks

I started a top last summer. Think I looked the instructions on the internet. It has grown alot but is a very slow growing process.

Pineapples are related to bromeliads. I saved my tops and set them outside in the garden last summer. I have seen them in other yards around town, but, the best growing ones I have seen were in containers in potting soil. I have been told to let them get a little dry between waterings and feed lightly-frequently with fish emulsion. I hope they will pickup speed, they have been slow to grow here. It takes 2-3 years to get fruit here.

Down in south FL they used to grow them as a field crop. More of FL is going under the pavement of urban sprawl and it is getting harder to find the FL grown fruit in the farmers markets.

Thanks folks. I'm going to try one, mostly just to see if I can do it. It sounds like it will be too much of a space hog trying to overwinter in the greenhouse but a real thrill to accomplish it. I googled it and it says they get 5 or 6 feet tall and wide.
