Look at this cute AV Baby in the making I fount in PF !
Allison very cool picture. Should that be linked to our sticky? Also perhaps those photos Begonia posted showing her rooted babies.
Oh yes great idea April. I was wondering if anyone was going to look at these cute babies ! They said the leaves had been in the water two months to get those babies so Laurie's babies of two weeks sure are a lot fast. But there's nothing like babies I thought this was a cute picture !
Allison, if I did the water method, as in the photo, would I then just break off the babies and plant?
In my other plants I notice that cuttings rooted in water go into some shock when planted in dirt- not bad shock, but for a few days they seem a bit bewildered by the lack of water and the adundance of dirt. would you wait until they are bigger and if so, how big?
Great picture find. I've read that the root systems of plantlet grown in water are very think and delicate. And also that it is difficult to transfer the plants from water to soil. This might be the reason your plants went into shock. I tried once to make the switch and didn't have very good luck.
I know a lot of people do it with great succes. But I have also heard water roots are different then soil roots and they have to grow new roots like suckers.
IT's best to keep the babies right with Mom leaf when planting keeping them all together until strong good size babies.
Some poeple add a little soil /prelilite at a time.
The one time I grew a baby inside a gallon zip lock bag on top of a damp paper towel. I filled a small pot with soil-less mix and made tiny hole in the middle. I have seen where people put vermiculite in the hole a little and do this for suckers too. I never did but wether way lay the root real gently on the hole gently covering roots but leaving babies above. I packed lightly and put soil so Mom leaf would stand up nice or put a toothpick or something to hold it up. Keep soil-less mix real light , and keep it more moist the first week as it's use to being in water.
Mine grew fine
Let me see I know there a links for this.
Here's some interest links from our Sticky April on leaves one is growing in water !

I just had to bump this cute picture of babies from Plant Files up !
That is such a cool pic. Thanks for bumping this us Allison, so us newer a/v's growers can learn and see more.
Maureen
Your well-come Marueen . It is cool isn't . I'm always finding neat things and plants I want to grow or just dream about in Plant Files :))
Thanks for posting this Allison and for bumping it up. I love rooting things in water. It's so much easier for me, for so so so many reasons. I haven't been feeling well lately, but am on the mend now...YIPEE! When I'm really back up on my feet I'm going to try a few experiments w/ rooting AV leaves in water and see what happens. I'll post any good results in the forum here, but don't hold your breath, this may not be till next summer sometime. I'm just very excited to see roots born underwater on AVs!!!!
Thanks & Merry Christmas everyone!
Heather
Hi Heather nice to see you :)) Missed you. Sorry you have not been well. Get better soon !
Glad you enjoyed this PF photo it is so neat ! It is a fun way to root leaves and other cuttings. I rooted an AV leaf on a damp paper towel in a zip-lock bag onces and it was so much fun watching the baby grow !
Merry Christmas !
Thanks!
I really like using a bubbler to root things. It's so much easier for me, that way if I don't feel well I don't have to worry about getting around to water everything that's rooting. There's 3 threads on it in the Propagation forum (Roots Easy in Water) I just started #3 with what you posted here. We had discussed AV leaves before but had never tried it, figuring they would rot. That's why I'm so excited about this. I can't wait to try it. For me it's just so much easier to work with water only vs. soil when rooting. I've always had a blast rooting AVs...I think they are one of the most fun plants to root....just waiting for those little baby leaves to poke through the soil, that's as good as Christmas morning!! =^) I still remember finding my first baby leaf and dancing all around my dining room, with DH watching me like I was a lunatic, LOL! Funny thing was that before I knew it he started checking for baby leaves every day too! Then tell me who needed water, more light, less light...LOL! There's just something about how those tiny leaves come up that give so much hope, it's like spring in a dixie cup, ROTFLOL!
Trying them in water, in a bubbler will be fun. I'll also try them in soil at the same time and see which ends up producing a baby leave first. Then I'll grow them on for a while and see which looks healthier, or if there's any difference at all...probably will be none. It's just so nice to know we have options, especially if we aren't feeling very well. It's so much easier to add water to a container than to carry pots to the sink, water them, let them drain, then carry them back (the whole time dodging doggies and kitty cats) especially when you're not feeling well. Everyone can understand that.
Next time I get to the store I'm picking up some new test AVs! Whoo-hoo.
That sounds fun Heather ! I'll have to check out your threads and the new one your doing ! Thanks ! L've been rooting some cuttings I got in a trade , and some cuttings we took from home next door when we moved. Wvweything seems to root and grow so fast here . I have a few things growing on our screen porch just in plastic pots and soil-less mix and they are growing so fast ! I looked at pictures I took Dec 5th and could not beleive the difference !
I don't have a bubbler I don't really know what it is? Let us know how it works for you !
A bubbler is simple and easy, easy, easy!! I have a bunch of info in my Garden Diary here http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/t/heathrjoy/4189/ about how to set one up. If that link doesn't work let me know, I know there's an easier way to link it but I can't remember how! LOL!
Long story short on bubblers is that they are an aquarium air stone in a bucket (or container) of water. The idea is that the more oxygen the cuttings get the faster they will produce roots...and the healthier the roots will be. It has always worked for me, and worked great...on anything that'll root in water. The funniest thing is that on my Diary page I have pics of AVs proving the point that I can root things in soil...having them pictured there as a plant that won't root in water! ROTFLOL! I guess I'll have to do that experimenting and take that pic down soon.
Some folks don't like the idea of rooting in water, but in my Diary it explains why it's been so, so much easier for me. I usually have a bubbler going all year, bringing it indoors in winter. But I had to take mine down in Oct. due to surgery and I haven't set it back up yet. Maybe I'll get to set it up it after the new year. I can't wait!
AVs have to be the eaisest plant to root. Water rooting really isn't necessary with them, but it would be fun just to try it to see what happens.
Thanks for the great info heather !
