Welcome to the garden from the Carolinas!

cindilynn, did you find the soil and composting forum? here's a link.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/soil/all/
it looks as if it has decent traffic so you might see a thread there that answers your question. The 11th (at time of this posting) one down is called Super Recipe for Seed Starting

Hope this helps

angele; that was a great fourm you told me about ,learned alot, last year i soaked my seeds in a tonicwhich worked but i used miracle-grow potting soil didn't like the way it worked once the seeds germinated they were growing well for a while then died noticed the potting soil had a white fuzzy coating on it all my plants were lost had to go and buy seedlings at a local nursery, never going back to store bought soil again making my own this time...its fun ,its like baking a cake a little of this and some of that...my husband always send i could bake a cake LOL WE WILL SEE.
THANKS AGAIN....CINDILYNN

Hi Cindilynn, you'll feel at home in no time.

Hey there Cindilyn! I think we all have our favorite mixes to start seeds. Mine is 1 part soil, 1 part peat moss, 1 part vermiculite, and 1 part perlite. I make paper pots, put them in one of my "mini greenhouses" under grow lights and they sprout in no time at all. My little greenhouses are anything I can scrounge that has a clear plastic top. Two of my favorites are square black trays from the local deli that were brought to my office by a vendor. They came holding cold cuts and other sundries for lunch, but when I spotted them with their lids, I comandeered them for starting seeds. 'Nother favorite is the cookie containers from my grocery store deli. Yummy cookies and seed starters too.
One trick I had to learn by trial and error was how soon to get them out of that high-humidity-fungus-gnat-damp-off environment.
Some things just take experince, but with all the help you can get here, you can cut your learning time down to piddley!
P.S. I'm from PA too, about 25 miles north of Pittsburgh. If you hppen to be anywhere nearby, there is another member who's invited us all to a plant swap in June. Close enough to be interested?
