Japanese Morning Glories

Brooksville, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone. I am fairly new to this website and I really enjoy glancing over the message boards. I love the humor and wit of a few of you in particular. I am always finding a different plant to look up and drool over. Does anyone have any Japanese morning glory seeds to trade for whatever I might have that interests you. I have about 14 different flower seeds and you can ask me what I have available. I am especially interested in Botan and Kikyo and Beni-chidori. They are truly beautiful. Very different than the morning glories I find in Burpee's and Thompson and Morgan. Also if anyone knows where I can at least buy these I would be grateful. I will cross my fingers

Hi Countrycotton and welcome'''I dearly "LOVE" morning glories,no matter how they can take over, just always have loved them. I'm not familiar with Japanese MG's,are their blooms smaller or larger or the same?? Curious? E-mail me and we'll see what we can do,ok?? Thank you, Sis'' Z5(NE KS.) What Zone are you???

Woodbourne, NY(Zone 5a)

Sis, Here's a link where you can see some Japanese morning glories: http://www.poporo.ne.jp/~kondoh/asagao/asagao98.htm

CC, I'm sorry I don't have any, but if anyone surfaces who has enough to share, I'd love to jump on the bandwagon, especially for Kikyo.

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Wow, Paris, me too! I can offer you Calystegia hederacea 'Flore Plena', if you're intereted.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Has anyone ever grown these before?? I have 4 seeds I received as part of a trade, I don't know the variety, the envelpe was just marked Japanese MG. I nicked the seeds and put them in a soiless mix about a week ago. No signs of anything yet. Is there anything special I should do with them? I've never had much luck with Morning Glories, though I love the flowers!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I usually soak mine for 24-48 hours in warm water. I've had everyone sprout. Now, these aren't Japanese, but I don't know if there's a difference in what works.

Woodbourne, NY(Zone 5a)

Judith -- I can't find any images of Calystegia. Do you know of any resource where they can be seen?

Wish I had the Kikyo to share, but I'm just a fan. I've never seen one in person and don't have a clue where to look for them.

Brooksville, ME(Zone 5a)

I don't know much about the Japanese morning glories yet. I stumbled across some pictures of them when I was looking at http://www.rebeccasgardenweb.com. They are truly beautiful. Many have exotic leaves as well as different colors for the flower. If anyone is interested in looking at these pictures they are under "Morning glories pictures" on the webpage when you get to this you can click onto "Gorgeous pics of Japanese Morning Glories" I think you can even buy them from the man who took the pictues but I thought I would try trading first.

Since we're all so enthralled and no one seems to have these beautiful plants or seeds for them, how about a co-op order?

It is hard for me to get out to a post office frequently, so I am probably not the best person to head it up, but if there is interest and no one else can do it, I'll take it on.

Initially, I was thinking that it is late in the season to be starting them, but many of them are good container plants, so they could be brought indoors when it gets cold.

Anyone want to volunteer to organize a Japanese morning glory co-op? We could order, for example, five packets of seed, and five people could each pay for one. Then the seeds could be divided, so each person would get a few seeds of each variety.

What do you all think?

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Great idea, Paris---but do any of us know of a source? I'm a catalogue junkie, but I've never seen anything like the 'Botan' or 'Beni-chidori'. I thought I was up-town with my Tie-Dye and Rose Zebra! (Ipomoea nil). As for pics of the Calystegia, I am so computer illiterate I can't post one, but you can do a search on Google and a nice one comes up, but the text is in French. It's a sterile hybrid, setting no seeds, but potentially invasive by underground runners. (Just a warning.)

Port Huron, MI(Zone 5b)

I'm certainly up to get involved with a co-op, whether it be for plants or whatever, but i definitely am unable(timewise) to organize one right now. If someone else takes it on, please count me in

Hello, everyone. I have seeds that were sent to me as 'Mom's Mini Blue Morning Glory'. They have large heart sheaped leaves and small (1/2"-1") sky blue flowers.

I found them to have an excellent germination rate. I am growing them in hanging baskets, training them to grow up the rope. Absolutely gorgeous and fast growers!

If anyone is interested, I could send, say 10-12 seeds for SASE to the first 5 requestors. I might be able to accomodate more but need to check my supply...and I need to get to bed right now!

Blodgett Mills, NY

Good morning alison,
Please email me your address & I will send you a sase for some of these seeds. I too enjoy morning glories and would love to have a couple of seeds.
Thanks, Jean

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Hmm, only three takers so far. Paris, SDoglover and Jefcrochet, I have sent you my address. Looking forward to sharing this most interesting vine!

Since this is really the plant trading forum, I feel bad offering seeds here. However, when I saw the pictures of the japanese MG's these immediately sprang to mind and I felt compelled to share with you, my friends.

I counted the seeds this morning and have enough for at least ten people...so seven left!

Hi,
I got Japanese mgs from a friend year before last. She got them from Japanese relatives. Anyway, the packages were in Japanese, so I don't have a clue what they said. The flowers from one pkg were double and all were dark purple, with a daintier vine. The ones from the other pkg looked more like tie dye, but much larger. They were truly beautiful, but I didn't get to save any seeds from them. They were definately different than any others I have grown. I wish you the best of luck in finding them.

Hey everyone I just ran across this thread and would love to get involved. I have a cousin that lives in Japan has for several years now. I will e-mail him and ask him if he know how to get some seeds. Not promising anything but it is worth a try. Will let you know his reply.

Woodbourne, NY(Zone 5a)

That's great, O-R! Your cousin would be making many flower-junkies very happy if he can help locate seeds. Many of these are seedless because, in the double-bloom hybrids, the stamen and pistils become petals. So they have to be raised from bought seed each time.

Judging from the posts here and in a thread I started in the co-op forum, there is a lot of interest if we can find a source.

If anyone is interested, I just posted a proposal for a Japanese Morning Glory co-op order in the Co-op Forum: http://davesgarden.com/showthread/63653.html

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I have one Kikyo! I hope it will bloom.. Still have few older seeds left. Can I save it inside for winter and grow it as perennial?

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

If the double-bloomers don't set seeds, then how do you get any seeds to begin----Oh, they're F1 crosses---never mind. Do you know if all the doubles are this way? I have a few seeds for a double Blue Picotee and Red Picotee, and the one time I tried to grow any I didn't do so well---guess this explains why they didn't reseed themselves.

New Bern, NC(Zone 8a)

I came across this thread and thought that someone might be able to identify a plant that has been given to me. It is described a perennial morning glory. It came from Spain. My plant is a rooting and hasn't bloomed yet. But I did see the blooms on their plant and they are an irridescent medium purple.I hope I'm not posting this in the wrong place.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Several varieties of MG are perennial, but frost-tender. Go to Google and do a search under 'Ipomoea' and you'll find some. Yours could be I. indica or I turbinata. I. indica is sterile (doesn't set seeds, but it does send out underground runners) the turbinata is not. Let me know what you have, if you identify it!

New Bern, NC(Zone 8a)

Hi Judith! Thank you for the help. It is not the turbinata.
Resembles I. Indica., but I found I violacacea and the blooms resemble violacacea more than Indica. The man that gave it to me propagated with cuttings but that doesn't mean it is without seeds. I'll check with him.He just gave me another of the plant. Last year I left mine in a pot and not hardy in a pot. It is hardy here in the ground zone 8 temps down to 30. I wish this was blooming so I could post a picture. What do you think about Violacacea?
Thanks,
Jennifer

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

I've never haad one of the violacea---if it sets seeds, let me know, okay?

Greenlawn, NY(Zone 6B)

I would love to try growing japanese morning glories - if
you are able to obtain any from Japan please let me know -
I have seeds for alot of different morning glories, but
nothing really exotic. I grew blue silk this year and it is quite large and beautiful.

For a good selection of morning glory seeds have a look
at SwallowTail Garden Seeds online in California.
