Kabschia Saxifrage season

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

For some of you, the Kabschia saxifrage season should be in full swing or about to happen. They are still a good 2 months away for me yet. Here are some I photographed in a friends garden in Victoria, BC about 2 weeks ago. They are really quite beautiful plants. He grows his in pots so the spring rains don't spoil the flowers. This is Saxifraga 'Peach Blossom'

and Saxifraga 'Mrs. Helen Terry'. His collection has over 200 cultivars! (collected over 20 years mind you). What a display....I only showed you the best.

They are just gorgeous. I have serious saxifraga envy! Someday, I'm gonna figure out how to
grow them.

The pots look like stone or hypertuffa - do you know what he's using?

They are lovely and Peach Blossom is a particularly nice colour. A nice treat on these cold wintry days!

He makes his own hypertufa pots....the rest of us rely on terracotta!

Saxifrage envy. Yup. I''m afraid I am catching the bug. too.

I purchased some saxifrage several years ago and killed them rather quickly. I've not dared try any since then. If I get some troughs built this year I'd like to try some saxifrage in them. Perhaps you could suggest some good sources for information on growing saxifrage.

They hate summer heat so grow them facing north...I don't get enough heat in summer to bother them so I grow them in full sun, but I've read they like to stay on the cool side. I have them in pots and in the ground and I must say, they seem to prefer pot culture. I am hoping to put a small crevice garden in this year...that should be ideal for the Kabschias.

These pics are gorgeous, and make me want to brave trying these beauties again!! If you do put in a crevice garden, we would love to see how you do it, and the result!! I, for one, have never seen the process of building one - and would love to learn how. So many plants would love to be grown this way - and I am not having good luck with some in ground, or pots.

Keep us posted!! (Pun intended...LOL)

Jamie
