I've had limited success. Remove the tails then they need to be stratified for at least 12 weeks. Pot them and place them in the fridge (not freezer) until mid-June then bring them into heat. Even then, germination is erratic.

Hi digging_dirt,
Here's a link for starting clematis from seed that I found:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bcollingwood/index.htm

I started 4 different ones last November, following some info from the above site and yesterday I noticed for the first time a little sprout poking it's head through the grit. There all sitting in an unheated greenhouse at the moment but up until that point I had them placed in a protected area on the deck outside. Honestly, I didn't expect to even see one sprout yet considering how long the process takes.

I hope you have a couple of hours because it takes a while to go through all the info on the site, lol.

Good luck,
Erynne

As I write this I noticed that I have 2 seedlings of Clematis viorna sprouting. These I sowed directly without chilling (I think chilling was recommended on the above link). I use the germination advice of the Ontario Rock garden Society, here's the link:
http://www.onrockgarden.com/ Once on the site, look for the link on the right to their seed germination guide. They list quite a few clematis including viorna, which, for that species, requires no chilling. Anyway, I sowed the seeds on Dec. 21.....3 months to the day they sprouted...just as the Ontario group suggested.

Other species do require the cold treatment. I've germinated alpina and macropetala by sowing in the fall and leaving them outside all winter. They then germinated in early June.

I hadn't heard of Clematis heracleifolia until now digging_dirt, so of course I had to look it up. How long did it take to germinate? The flowers appear to be quite attractive.

Congrats!

Will i put them in the baggy and paper towels on the seventeenth of march i had about 20 seed 16 as sprouted now so i planted them up.
Was realy suprised figered it would take longer. yes it is a pretty on.
This moring i checked another one i have called tangea i think thats spelt right its suppose to be a yellow one and had six of those sprouted i think the person i traded for them must have chilled them befor i started them.
have five otherones in the baggies now wating for them to start.
I couldnt find anything about the heracleifolia tell me what color is it.

That one is called Chinese bush clematis, Tube clematis just for a start. It is a blue one. I'm sure you will love it if you like blue flowers. The yellow one is probaby tangutica, one of the hardiest and easiest ones.

Blue mmmm yes i will like it and the other is alot like the radar love
clematis only the flowers are bigger i think . Oh i hope so not to fond of Radar.

Sorry, but I don't think you'll notice much difference. Plant it out in the boonies or trade it for something you like. Some peeps love it.

Hi digging_dirt,
Sounds like you have that paper towel and baggie method working well for you. Did you see the Plant Files entry for Clematis heracleifolia? It looks like the shades of blue really vary if you go by the photos posted by other members and comments. Here is the link just in case you didn't see it:
