Hi, I'm new to this Forum and have a few questions. When do Hummingbirds come through Northern States like New Jersey and New York and are they going South or North? I've heard that the yellow feeder caps attract more wasps and bees on the feeders; true or false? Thanks for any help!
Hummingbirds
Am not sure of the migration route through your area...I think there are maps of that on the internet...try a google search for hummingbird migration.
As for the yellow feeder parts...yep, those do attract bees more bees than the red ones. I have a variety of feeders I've made using some red and some yellow feeder ports...the bees are always around the yellow ones. However, once they figure out the red ones equal sweet nectar too they know exactly where to fly to find those.
I can pretty much keep them away by placing pie pans or shallow dishes of a sweeter solution way out by the corner of my fence or by hanging some from trees far away from my hummie feeders.

Here is a link to the final 2005 map of their migration northward .....

Thank you very much everyone! :-)
Pelletory,
I'm also new to this forum. I noticed you are also from N.J. and was wondering what plants you use to attract hummingbirds? So far only the native honeysuckle vine (loniceria sempervirens) has been effective for me.
Pixie
Hi Pixie, I just started with trying to attract them but I have 3 large Trumpetvines growing in my yard (1 yellow and 2 orange). I plan on getting some different things this year.
Does anyone know if they are attracted to Wisteria; I have a monster size one of those.
That map does not show Utah is that because we have no "Ruby Throated" I had the same question as to migration and found that same map - nothing I found showed Utah - anyone know?....want to know when to put my feeders out - thinking May 1...........
