Giving capillary matting a shot!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok I bought a bit of the capillary matting from Bluebirds and going to give it a shot!
I also tried the same thing with a towel which I read somewhere..
1. I am attempting to see if the capillary matting is worth it and or better then a towel
2. I am going to see if it waters well and I like it :)

I am trying it on a couple of the babies as they need to be watered the most :)

Keep your fingers crossed for me guys and dolls :)

I am crossing fingers for you but what is the matting. What is it made out of?

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Erm the one I bought looks like a thin insulation with a plastic top with holes in it.
Not sure how else to describe it
I read somewhere that you can do the same thing with old towels which I am going to give a shot :)

Have fun Lorry ! Let us know how it works. What do you do sit the plants on wet mat ? Doesn't get modling and smelly ? How do you feed your plants this way ?

Can you post a picture? I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what you are doing.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is a photo of it. It is about the 15th item down the page. I have thought about giving it a try also.

I don't know Allison. I am going to take them out and wash them now and again.
You feed them the same way..you put it on the mat :)
I will keep you all informed of my progress :)

Very interesting can't wait to see how it works then maybe I'll try it :))

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it would be great if it worked and maybe an answer to how to water plants when I'm gone.

Yes but how much water can you put in at one time..and how long will it last.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

You can hang a strip of it over the edge and let it dangle into a pot of water (reservoir). It should wick water up from the reservoir and distribute it throughout the mat.

It's basically the same concept as wicking, except instead of string carrying the water into the pot, the mat and pot bottom are in direct contact.

As with wicking, you'll want a slightly lighter potting mix. If you have fungus gnats, you may see that problem increase.

I have a roll of the stuff somewhere - I should set it up! Maybe I'll do it this weekend.
