Okay i went to Wal-Mart and looked for small cups and I found solo 3oz. bathroom cups is this the ones you all use? Why are these the best for starting leaves? I am very very new to this. Started my first leaves on 3-8. Thanks for any replies.

cups
Hi Lovesdaylilies,
They are the right ones. They are not very deep so the babies do not need to make long roots. It is the ideal size for most of AV babies. I would use a bigger cup for very large leaves.

The 3 oz. are great size. Sometimes hare to find. People here I have seen use one oz. to eight oz. all with good sucess ! I was just taught to use 3 oz. and given a bag with fives holes in the bottom of each one. Yes five ! and bags of names leaves when I joined local group ! There have been times when the stores don't have 3 oz. so hubby will pick up 5 oz. and they work the same.
Now Laurie gave me some 2 oz. dixie cups and I am in love. Years of 3 oz. love these two oz.
Most important is to use a very light growing media.
Some people use light soil-less mixture , some preilite , some perlite and vermiculite, some are try Gel Root ! Which ever is best for you and your enviroment is Ok to use they will all work.
Another important cut the stems of the leaves short . Always an inch or less. Also the size of the leaf does not realy chnage the size of the cup. Their all going to grow babies the same way weather you use 3 oz. or 2 oz. or 5 oz. . Some people like to use small so thet get roots and babies faster. I think 2 oz. would be the smallest for me as I leaves mine with Mom leaf for a good 3-5 months and I want the babies to have plenty of room to grow !
Another important keep leaves warm 68-74 is good.
Give them plenty of non-buring light. and feed them !
Good luck !
Kelly, listen to Violet, she sure knows her stuff. Most of the leaves I started I left too much stem on, and they are taking forever to sprout. I will be patient, I will be patient..........
Glad you are here!!!!!!
Pam your so sweet. I'm not bragging just Blessed and greatful. Just really started growing babies in an additive mode about 2 years ago. I have grown thousand of babies and at least a thousand different varieties . It's a difficult challenge for me with my health I enjoy growing by leaf so much I know they keep me going. I'm not a Vendor , or big time grower ,
just a grower who enjoys each new baby and wish I was not limited with my strength I'd have done a lot more !
yall are all so helpful! thanks so much for making me feel welcome here! you know by my name i started on this site loving daylilies and i still do but i find myself here reading the post by all of you way way more than i am on the daylily board. each one of you here has been so nice! thanks again for all your help.

i started my first leaves in larger cups so they may take longer. i do like these 3 oz. better they will be easier to handle and not take up as much room etc. and i will be able to get more on the heating pad lol.
Kelly if you like them and their easier to handle then their the correct ones for you ! The times varies so much it seems I would not even think aobut the time or pressure yourself just have fun.
Now if your a carzy nut cat like me and I don't know how to stop putting downs leaves and my good DG friends keep sending more the babies are coming so fast out of my ears and it's hard enough keeping up with watering let alone transplanting. So it seems like the babies are growing fast. I can't wait till Laurie leaves all start giving her babies she's going to have thousands of babies ! Yippee. But the thrill of a new baby, a new bloom never goes away. It just gets more and more excitng !
