Look what I found, today! What is it?

Silver Spring, MD

I went to Behnke's Nursery to see what spring would bring; hoping av's and look what I found. I think it is gorgeous Streptocarpus Hybrida. What is it. The "official person" at the nursery said the care is basically like an av. Bright light but no direct sun, cool to moderate temperature, and moist soil.

Here's a closer picture of the blooms. Tell me they're gorgeous. I can't stop drooling.

Oh so lovely Nanna! What a nice one!
thanks for show and tell!

Silver Spring, MD

A nice one what? What did I buy?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Streptocarpus! See, you have the AV/Gessie bug and don't even know it! LOL.

And a beautiful Strep at that! Now you can put a leaf section down and have babies!

Check out our gessie sticky for more info too.

Silver Spring, MD

OH!!! that's a strep! Thanks

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW are you licky to be able to go by Streptocarpus close to home ! Was it expnsive ? Most important thing they like to be dry not evenly moist like Av's. If it goes dry and wilts water it and it will come back if you over water them they die :((. I've had them for years and even though it's so easy to over water I did it last fall. I bought like 10 Streps, not cheap ones either. I have like 4 of them left.
Other than this their easy to grow and progate and all kinds of info in second gessie sticky !
I have one thhat blooms like yours !

Silver Spring, MD

Thanks for the information. I didn't know they like to be dry. I'll have to watch that. I'm a water freak.

I paid 9.99 with 10% discount. So the price was 8.99. Is that good? The plant is quite large and they had several others. One, that I may still go back for was pink with a yellow center and a purple stripe coming from the center petal.

Beautiful plant Nanna.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

That's a good price Nanna. I paid 12.99 locally for large plants (but that was also at a hoity toity florist shop so the price was high)

yours is healthy looking. I can vouch for what Ali says. I let mine get almost completely dry before I bottom water.

They have on occasion wilted (the little ones) but they bounce right back. Like my chirita did. It was so dull and lifeless when I got home from FL. then i gave it warm water and two days later it looks brand new!
Go figure!

Also when you water with warm tepid water, the soil drinks it fast. Cold water tends to not soak as fast.

Silver Spring, MD

Many thanks. I will try not to kill it. It is so pretty.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

STUNNING!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

nanna,thats very pretty!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Hehe Yup a strep :)
She is gorgeous :)
and I treat mine just like my AVs and they seem fine :)

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Very pretty. Yes, yes, yes do go back and get the other beauty. Oh by the way...I'm an enabler :)

Deb

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Deb I was going to say the same thing. Get the other one :))

Silver Spring, MD

Both you enablers are great. thanks for giving me permission. Actually, I went to the av Club meeting this evening and traded av leaves for a strep leaf. I will let you know its name in the morning. Time for me to be in bed (two hours ago).

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I missed this thread earlier! That's a cutie. Which Behnke did you go to? I was at the potomac one a couple of weeks ago and they only had AVs.

Silver Spring, MD

The one in Beltsville on Route 1 just north of Powder Mill Road. I love that store. The avs we not so great then I saw the strep and lost it. The name of the leaf I got is Falling Star.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh I love falling Stars ! I grew a large full in bloom . In was in a plastic pot sitting in a pretty blus agate pot with saucer. I sent it to my sick sister . I've sent her dozens of plants always in blooms as sending them to her are like sending Florida plants. They don't live long :((. Sure wish I kept a leaf.
It's great Strep ! Happy Growing .

Silver Spring, MD

If I sent you part of a leaf will it survive? The leaf I have is large enough to cut into 3 pieces. The other thing I can do is grow all three pieces and send you a plant.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

it's a beauty Nanna!!

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Nanna,
That's a beautiful strep!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I'm not sure Nanna if it would last that Long. I have sent them out of the Country and they were fine. And if they get limp you can put them in water.
Your box of leaves from my contest was shipped today ! Hope you like them and get many babies.
Your other box will be a little bit longer couple weeks still have more to get out before you. But well worth the wait !

Silver Spring, MD

You are a dear. I must make room for everything.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh it's just leaves in this box Nanna . Be a couple weeks for your Special plants :))

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

nanna, there are some good links in the gessie sticky for starting your leaf. Dibleys has a good 'photo how-to' in theirs.
Mine are popping up pups all over. (they're noid's though but look like Ogalvees hybrids)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Ogalvees hybrids are great ! The one of Strep plants I gave you Laurie is an Ogalvees hybrids

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here Nanna, here's a link that Ali gave me last week. It's a good one

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Wow Do you have friends or family who can send you leaves ?
I am going to order some of their feed tablets from them ! I've bought a few of the Strep books.

Westford, MA(Zone 5b)

Violet_Treasure - Do you have Dibley's new book? You can supposedly get it for $20 from the Dibley site. Is it worth getting?

Sue

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Sue
Yes their worth it ! I bought three right from their set. I gave one away with blooming Strep in a Contest. One I sold with free blooming plant.
