I have what I believe to be Munstead lavender plants. They should be pruned right after blooming, so would I be killing them or preventing flowering this year if I pruned them now?
Can I seperate the roots now too?
Too late to prune lavender?
I pruned mine hard a couple of years ago, and they bounced righ back and flowered like crazy. I didn't even notice that it was too much later than normal. Most lavenders don't really need to be separated, as they are a shrub, but if you have plants that have come up from seed around the parent, now would probably be a good time to move them. Munstead is one very hardy shrub - mine are in a raised bed that is riddled with rodent holes and they just ignore all of the tumult and bloom away each year as if they were in a lovely garden in England!
Tom DeBaggio (VA herb guru) advises pruning lavenders in March, before new growth begins. You don't want to do it midwinter, as freezing temps aren't kind to newly pruned branch tips.
Wow, I was right on! Thanks guys.
