Optimara trinidad is NOT trinidad LOL

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok I bought this as optimara trinidad....Though I am not going to call it a No ID..it does not fit the description of trinidad what so ever.
I dont' care though..I LOVE it!

Lorry the plant looks small ? Is it a standard ? Maybe the foliage Sported ? Where did you get it.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I got it on ebay...Seen it..had to have it :) She has donated to a couple of people recently so she has slimmed down some :)
It looks like a mini to me but I am not certain since I really don't know what this one is :)
trinidad is not supposed to have any variegation..so I doubt it sported :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well plant with " NO" variegation can Sport to variegte
I know it's happen to myself .

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I wonder if the person you bought it from could help you with the ID... maybe you ended up with another from their collection that they'd recognize.

It's gorgeous!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry not only has dark colored foliage Sported for me it has for many other Hybridizers.
Your's may be mis-marked or if it's not a Sprot the reason can't be beacasue Trindad is not supose to be variegated. What I am trying to explain Trindad's foliage could have Sproted to have variegation !
>>
Example
Rob's Fiddle Faddle (7431) 10/06/1990 (R. Robinson) Semidouble rose-pink. Dark green, pointed, hairy, serrated/red back. Semiminiature
>>
Sported to
Rob's Lucky Ducky (9395) 10/15/2004 (R. Robinson) Semidouble dark rose-pink pansy. Variegated dark green, white and pink, pointed, serrated; sucker propagation. Semiminiature
>>>>
Another example of sporting foliage
Rob's Fuddy Duddy (7886) 06/02/1993 (R. Robinson) Semidouble dark mauve-purple sticktite pansy. Dark green, quilted. Semiminiature
Sported to;
Rob's Lucky Charm (9293) 11/21/2003 (R. Robinson) Semidouble orchid-mauve pansy. Variegated dark green and gold, plain; sucker propagation. Miniature
>>>
It's happened to me before too :))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh my goodness another one of Rob's !
Rob's Penny Ante (8177) 06/05/1995 (R. Robinson) Semidouble white sticktite pansy/dark blue-purple eye. Medium green, pointed, glossy. Miniature
Sported to ;
Rob's Lucky Penny (8611) 05/31/1997 (R. Robinson) Semidouble white pansy/dark blue eye, variable thin blue edge. Variegated light-medium green and white, pointed, glossy; sucker propagation. Miniature

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Well I tend to doubt it Critter..since this is the plant they had in the photo on ebay....But maybe..I can always ask them...though I have a feeling they would fight that is was tinidad :) No matter I HAD to have it no matter what it was :)

Cool Allison :) I didn't know they could sport into variegated foliage :) I will be curious to see what this one does :)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I have lucky penny :) and so far that is still alive. I didn't realize it was a sport of penny ante :) which I would some day like to have

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Can you FC fold look for Golden Eye (or is there another Golden Eyes)
The one I saw on Robs didn't look variegated but mine is (or it says it Golden Eyes but may be mis marked)

Either way it's a cutie pie, but perhaps it sported to variegated foliage.

Either way, Trinidad or not it's a lovely one!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Heh just maybe it is Optimara Trinidad (6602) 05/25/1987 (Holtkamp) Single violet-blue two-tone/dark eye. Medium green, plain/red back. Standard
>>
And it Sported ... you could progate it three generations even by sucker or leaf and name it.
Ask the people you bought it from send them picture and ask about the varieagation. Maybe it has really sported.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I am going to do just that :)
Would be cool to have an Optimara sport :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes and it very possible. I have a trailer from Bluebirds that was dark foliage and turned total all variegated and lots of pink. While it was changing it had like no green, mostly white and pink little dark green. So weird.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

That is very cool :) Hmm got me thinking. I am going to contact the seller

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Your Mini Papa is so pretty ! Mine have a little variegation. Where it came from might be warm or they use a plant food hogh in nitrogen ? I'm going to grow some babies they should variegate !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry Thanks for taking time to take pictures !

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Whoa....you folks sure know your AV's!

Your photo caught my eye, Lorry.

These pink/white variegated leaves are what got me interested in AV's....I have two similar to this, one is a standard, I think....named "New Year's Eve' (does anyone else have that one?) and the other is a NOID that I started from a leaf sent to me by a friend.

So...nothing constructive to add to the conversation, here (lol!)....but a lovely plant, I had to say!!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Hi Nan
I like pink in the foliage too ! pretty and facinating !
Your plant is a pretty one !
New Year's Eve (Lyon) Double pink star/dark wine sparkle edge. Variegated dark green, white and cream, variable pink. Standard
Do you have any pictures ?
Great growing your plant by leaf ! I enjoy growing plants be leaf too ! What method did you use ?
I bet it's beautiful :))

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Hi Violet_Treasure, nice to 'see' you again!
I'll try to get a photo of 'New Year's Eve'.....it's *just* about to bloom!

The one I started from a leaf is still quite a small plant....and it took a year to get that size!
I was proud of myself, as I've tried propagating from leaves in the past but have always been unsuccessful.

I had tried straight Perlite....and it worked, as far as the propagation itself went, but I swear that as soon as I transferred them to pots of soil.....poof!....goners!

So this time i just used loose, well-draining soil (with plenty of perlite mixed in) in a small pot....and it worked!!

The 'New Year's Eve' is a good sized plant that I actually found at WalMart of all places....it's recently started to put out lots of new variegated growth and buds....woohoo!!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I got mine from Rainbow greenhouses :) I am always SOOO IMPRESSED with everything I get from her

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks Nan :)
Nope..I don't have new years eve but it sounds very pretty :)
I would be happy to send you leaves of mini papa and golden eye once they are ready to donate again if you like.
Oh and I pot my leaves in seed trays with soil :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW can't wait to see your flowers of New Years Eve !
The best growing media is very light ! good gorwing.
It takes a good 3-5 months before a baby plant is good size even recomended by Rob's at Violet Barn. And most cases takes 9-12 months for a blooming plant so your doing terrific ! Now you need to take a leaf or two off of New Year Eve's plant and root them !
Yipee ! Gosh what a lucky rare find at Wal-Mart. WOW

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Lorry...thanks so much for offering.....not sure I should add even more plants to my evergrowing collection....but maybe mine will be ready later to send leaves to you!

I know, Violet_T...I couldn't believe I found it there.

I'll prolly take a few leaves off sometime in the future...but right now it's looking so lovely, I simply CAN'T!! lol!

Time for me to go....don't get online at night....bye 'til tomorrow!
