Red Brugs in Phoenix?

Phoenix, AZ

I know they like cooler temps. But I do have a strange micro climate with 4 ponds and a large Mesquite that provides a lot of shade. Anyone in a warmer climate ever been succesful? I bought a rooted cutting on E-bay...if it doesn't work I'm only out 10 bucks :)

The only ones I know that have been able to get sanguinea to bloom out here have been in the coastal areas. Even then he was putting them in 75% shade. They're pretty, aren't they. Heck, like you said, you're only out 10 bucks so it's worth a try. Maybe your little micro climate will be enough to make an exception.

There are some other types of brugmansia that are heat tolerant that you could probably grow.

I've got 3 of them I started from seed. The oldest is only a foot tall. I'm going to try it just because I'm a glutton for punishment. I like trying things. I'll baby it in the shade, on the north side of the house this summer and see what happens. We only get a couple weeks of bad heat, so maybe I'll luck out. Only paid a couple bucks for the seed. Probably won't work, but won't it be a kick if it does.

Come on you guys. Think positive. I never had a problem with them in the heat and neither did my sister as long as you keep them in the shade. They cannot take the direct sun.

Altho, I let mine go but hers did fine but didn't bloom until she put them in the greenhouse around September. At that time they were about 3 or 4 feet tall. Once she put them in the greenhouse they went like gang busters. Grew tall, around 7 feet tall and branched very nice, and bloomed all winter. She had the greenhouse on 45 degrees all winter but it was down to 0 several times outside.

We are not near the coast. Inland, so we do not have the humidity. I don't know how cuttings will do. The seeds did great. I have my seedpod on her plant and it is going on 6 months now. I am told it takes 3 to 9 months to ripen.

Jeanette,

I'm talking MONTHS of 110 + of blast furnace heat. Maybe I should do the opposite of people in snow country? Keep it indoors in the summer and put it out in the winter? LOL!!
Anyways, thanks for the words of encourgement! I'm on a mission! :)

Ok, Fish, maybe it couldn't take that and yes, you could take it indoors. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Jeanette

P.s. You poor thing. I guess that is why they invented air conditioning. For you people.
