Show plants

Silver Spring, MD

Has anyone on the forum entered a judged show? Just curious

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

yes, but I didn't go in person and it was a gessie show, not an AV show. My colleague swung by my office and grabbed an mini AV (Bumble Magnet) and Nem wettsteinii for the show table - she thought there might not be enough plants there. Well, I got ribbons on both, even though I hadn't exactly been grooming them for show. One of the members took a photo of the Nem:

He didn't take one of the AV and I don't have a good pic of it either....

That's my very limited "by proxy" show experience!

Awesome Keyring. I was going to but my health I was just not able to keep going and to participate :(( Maybe in another life :))

Silver Spring, MD

I am going to my first meeting at the BAltimore AV Club, Society, something and I know they have a show in May. Guess I will find out more about it on monday night.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes Shows will be wonderful Nanna :)) We could show and sell but had to work the show/sales to do so.
I do know you had to own the plant at least three month to show it. There are a lot of strick guielines . I know you could grow to show :))

Silver Spring, MD

Don't know, but I am thinking about it.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Wll I use to know all the steps. One is disbudding so many weeks before the who, and a couple weeks before high bloom booster food. And each week light is increased and more and more :)) I'll have to find the list around. Or do you have the grow to show book ?

Silver Spring, MD

I have the book that gives you step by step instructions; Thanks for your offer. You ar a very generou and caring.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I hope you do show Nanna and give us play by play updates so we can live vicariously!

I don't have any plants large enough or mature enough to show but we talk about it at our AVSA.

Some of yours already look like show plants!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well Laurie what about Miniatures. They also have displays where you can use just the flowers even Strep flowers. You can also all the shows I went to show Gessies and they can be showed just for foliage ! There are lot's of options :))

Silver Spring, MD

Thanks Laurie. We'll see what happens at the meeting tomorrow night.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

our AVSA is having a show coming up pretty soon, since it will be a first for me. I'll go and observe and be like a sponge with the info and then decide if I want to show or just grow.
Not sure I have the talent to show.

Silver Spring, MD

I'm not sure either. I just think I might be a fun new experience.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

oh you've got it Nanna, I saw that Ma's debutane at 16" WOWZA!

Silver Spring, MD

I'm sure there are many more items on the list of the judges besides size. You know, I didn't do anything different with Ma's D that I did with the other plants. I think it is just a good plant. In the book Growing for Show, Pauline can't remember her last name says (paraphrasing) life is to short to work with every plant. You find the ones that grow well for you and stick to those. The more I think about it the more that makes sense to me. Why have shelves full of plants that don't respond to my particular way of caring. It ends up very sad for the plant and sad for me.

Lilburn, GA

I thhink this is a great thing to do. when I have more plants, and they are bigger 9mine are all little babies now), I would like to do it. In my club, they have plant judging at everymeeting and anyone can enter. I think it ig great to have an aim and work for it. You see what you are capable of. It igves you more reward than just growing them.

That is just what I think. :o)

And I think you Nana and Begonia have what takes to gorw a show plants really well.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I know Nanna, I keep trying to follow your advise from months ago (an older thread) to keep a managable collection. but I think I've been bitten by the AV/gessie bug and I can't help myself.

What's an addict to do. I know, build an addition on the house, with big windows and lots of shelves! A garden room! Ah Ha!

I think I'll buy the Growing for Show book. We discussed it at our last AVSA meeting and they said even if you are NOT growing to show, there is so much good growing/culture advise in the book that it's worth it's weight in gold. Would you agree?

Silver Spring, MD

The book is great. Lots of good sound advise and very readable. Something you get books and you read them and say to yourself, "What did that say?" or "Now, what am I supposed to do?" Not so here. There is no mistaking wheat is being said and how to go about doing her suggestions. I love it.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

When I join our local group the first meeting they sent me home with the book !
They have been having big shows for 47 years ! Some of the show plants had rows and rwo of leaves and 24 or more inches across with so many flowers. You do get judge on flowers, bloom true, how many flower they judge by variety and size of plant for how many flowers the plant should have. Nothing can be old, flowers, foliage, Symentry has to be exact, plants have to potted in white plastic correct size pots. Years ago they had to wrap them in foil. Trailers and gessies can be in different types of pots. Trailer everyone know has to have at least three crowns from one stem and all crowns have to be in full bloom.
They have different catorgories, like most unique pot ! displays all kinds of funn!

Abilene, TX

Go for it, Nanna!!!! We'll be the pep squad. : )

Silver Spring, MD

I went to the av club this evening and they are not going to have a show but a display. There will be three judges and ribbons and cash prizes. My mind was spinning and I'm about to fall asleep. I will tell all in the morning.

Good Night

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes do tell! Cant wait till tomorrow to hear about it!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Show plants are unbelievably beautiful WOW !

Silver Spring, MD

OK, Here is the skinny!

First off, I was excited all day. And the excitment continued into the evening. There were about 20 people there and everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Plans were made for the May (no longer show because of time constraints) display and sale. The displays will be judged but by Baltimore members and not paid "professionals". We are limited to the number of entries because the mall will only allow 8 tables for both the show and sale. Everyone is bring at least 40 plants each to sell. The split is 80% to the grower and 20% to the club. One of the members is dating the owner of the Lyndon Lyons greenhouse and she said he would be glad to donate about 100 plants. He will also be lecturing at an upcoming meeting.

The most enjoyable part of the meeting was the trading. Everyone brought leaves and plantlets and cuttings of different plants and we spent the better part of the evening talking to eachother about plants, methods, and just getting to know eachother. I took 4 sets of leaves and 15 plants and came home with 3 plants and 12 sets of leaves.

My collection now includes:
leaves of:
Happy Harold
Music Box Dancer
The King
Pow Wow
Black Magic
Pirate's Gold
High Jinks (fantasy)
Heavenly Notes
Buckeye's Bouquet
A strep called Falling Stars,
and a Chirita called Moonlight that is supposed to get HUGE
I also have a set of leaves that I forgot to write the name, but I remember what the bloom looked like. It was small fushia with red edge and double. I may have to wait until the next meeting to find out the name.

The plants include undivided solo cups of:
Buckeye's Bouquet
Storybook Princess, and
a beautiful pale blue double that I forgot to write the name of. I will have to email Shirley and get the name.

I will plant everything this morning.

Summed up--we had a very good time and I joined and plan to attend each of the meetings. I will attend the display and sell. But, because of time, I don't know if I can have any plants ready to display or sell. I think they want blooming plants because of mother's day. We'll see what happens.

Fun time!!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Very exciting Nanna. I always liked it when we had speakers ! And the owner of Lyndon Lyons greenhouse speaking and helping so nice ! I'm going to get my order ready for them today ! They don't start shipping until May . I need their new plant Laughing Alison ! And a few Chimeras.
Your got a nice bunch of leaves and plants !
Good luck in your sale and Display/show !

Silver Spring, MD

Thanks, Allison

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Nanna! Wow, lucky you to hear from a grower like LL! That's a sale not to miss!

You got the coveted Pow Wow too? I know a lot of folks on this list want that one!

Silver Spring, MD

I set the leaves this morning so goodies will be coming.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I wish April was posting, I found one on ebay for buy it now. small plant but good vendor and the price is right!

Silver Spring, MD

Not only is there a person connection with LL but Sorono as well. I cant remember which Sorono though. I saw some pictures of their last show and the plants were beautiful. I especially noticed how perfect the leaves were. It added wonderfully to the total plant. Guess I will start working on leaves and really learn how to grow violets.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Laurie Dmail April

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I did email her the other day. I'm tempted to just buy it and ship to her later. I already have leaves coming from them so I could tag on. I know she wants it so bad.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

sounds like you had a good time! Falling Stars is a beauty and a proven good grower. I don't have it but I hear very good things about it.

Silver Spring, MD

I had a very nice time. I saw a picture of Falling STars. It the leaves produce babies you are welcome to one or more. Allison, too. and anyone else who would like one. I divided the leaf into three.
