Happy Harold

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Does anyone know where to get this AV? I want one because my Dad's name is Harold. He pasted away and I would love to find one of these. Also, does anyone know of a AV named Roberta anything?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh Diane it's a beautiful plant. I think Nanna got one from Rob's violet Barn ! And Violet Gallery has them also. It's a vintage with beautiful variegation ! I was thinking of gatting one also :))
This is what I fount in FC Granger's Roberta (3414) 05/01/1978 (Eyerdom) Double light lavender frilled. Ruffled. Large
Granger's are aweseom vintage plants !

Allison, You are right. I got it late last year and am waiting for it to bloom. Too little as yet to take a leaf.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes you posted a picture ? The variegation is wild !
I may buy one :))

I got mine off of eBay a month or so ago. The seller was Bloominjungle.

How is your's doing. Growing well good variegation ? What was the cost and shipping ? I am wondering I know I can get blooming size plants from Violet Gallery
and nice but smaller plants from Rob's comparable shopping ! Do you have a picture of your's. I know Nana's was stunning !

Silver Spring, MD

I haven't posted yet, Allison. Harold, as most varigates, is slow in growing. I was told by Rob or Violet Barn that the wait is well worth it. I'm counting the days until I see blooms.

Scotts Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes, mine is quite small too -- 3 oz. solo cup still. The variegation is quite pretty, though.

I was told by the seller that Happy Harold is slow to start, but when he gets going . . . well, he's worth the wait basically.

I think I paid aroun $5.00 for him and the shipping was $7.00 -- that's because it was winter and he came with a heat pack.

I'm sorry, but I don't have any pictures of him as I don't have a camera. :(

I remeber you posting you were going to get him from Violet Barn and broke down and paid winter shipping for a couple others. Could not remeber if you posted pictures, but I do know I went to look at it and was like WOW.

Pretty sure Violet gallery has it. I put my VG order in Jan 4th. I think it was. I had to cut my list to more than half as I wanted too many. They have a great selections of plants !

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Looks like Linda has it at bloomin jungle. Could always email her and ask for plants vs leaves

I just moved mine to a 4 inch pot last week.

I am going to change to spring water. I think we have lots of chlorine in the system here in Montomery county.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

No blooms yet ? 4 inch pot ? Seems large enough for blooms don't you think ?

Silver Spring, MD

I followed Rob's instructions. 6 months from the date on the 2 inch pot whether blooming or not, move it to inch pot. Soooooooo!!! that's what I did. It was the same with Ma's Debutante. It took a long time for her to start blooming.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh really he says move the plants to 4 inch at 6 months old even if it's not large enough ? That's interesting . I wonder how old his plants are at shipping . Some I have got from him were already blooming. If the plant was old enough to ship you's think 6 months later it would be old enough to bloom ?
Then again if the plant is small in a pot too large it's going to use it's energy into trying to fill the pot up with roots before it blooms.
I felt bad I had some really large plants I had to move from 2 inch pots the roots were bount coming out the bottom. Most time I go up one step like 2.50 or 3 inch the most but I was out of those pots. So I used 4 inch. Extra care must be taken in watering them.

Silver Spring, MD

Not six months old. Six months from the date on the 2 inch pot received from him. I assume that is six months from the time he placed the new plant in the 2 inch pot.

I understand exactly what you are saying. Sometimes I wish that gardening and growing plants was an exact science. But when you are dealing with living things you have to work with their time frame and not the schedule.

I totally agree in using the extra care. You are right on!

I was looking at Rob's culture corner
Where has potting he recommends that every house plant will need to be re-potted every 6 months recieve fresh soil. He also says not to pot them into large pots
if the root system is too small. is this where you meant ?
http://www.robsviolet.com/culture_corner.htm
He also says Miniatures/semi-miniatures never need a pot larger than 2.50. I know those are standards do not mean them.
I do understand a AV like tight shoes to bloom ?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I was reading this link of his also.
http://www.robsviolet.com/repotting_violets.htm
He does recommend re-potting every six months new soil but does not mean larger pot. And he does say except for growing to show a 4 inch pot is rarely needed for standard plants.
I have a young large Av in a 4 inch pot with roots coming out the bottom. I ordered it a 5 inch pot. I was always taught in class and reading to go up one size at a time. .
Maybe your plants are old enough and large enough for 4 inch pots not saying their not. But is so this size
is I would think would be blooming ?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Rob does have a lot of good info

Silver Spring, MD

Rob's suggestions from on the back of the blue invoice/packing list he sends with his mail orders.

"Potting. If receiving a standard violet, pot into a 4' pot when it begins to bloom OR about 6 months after the date on the pot. Miniature violets can remain in their small pots. Most houseplants will need repotting every 6 months. Use no larger than a 4' or 5' pot for standard violets, and no larger than 2' to 2 1/2: pots for miniatures. Avoid deep pots. For other, especially spreading plants, pot into large pots only as root-growth necessitates."

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW very different ! Been awhile send I got a box from him. But I have one coming on the 10 th. If going to call amd talk to him about this . Special when he says not to pot in a pot too large.
