Whew....beyond warm today...I rushed my babies out there so they can soak up that sun and make some roots.....puh-lez!!! Left to right: Kona Rainbow (that's how Ed listed it), Celedine (this baby has some roots already), & Duke. Everyone keep their fingers crossed...I just want to see one little bitty leaf....

Ah....sunshine...in VA
Nice cutitngs!!
Thanks Michael...let's just hope they root vrs. rot. LOL
Very nice, Chantell! Those look great!
Glad to hear you say that Clare. :)
Glad to hear you say that Clare. :)
Chantell, I see a little brown at the base of the middle one. It could be sunburn, which is harmless. Does it feel firm? If it does, you are fine. It also looks like you have some wrinkles in the first cutting, which is no big deal, but you might mist it more frequently and even water lightly if the soil is dry. The soil should be moist but not wet. Some people say don't water at all during rooting, but when my cuttings are in the full sun or are on bottom heat, they need plenty of water to root well. Most cuttings will dry out if trying to root in dry soil, especially if given heat and light.
Clare,
Thank you! I checked the Celedine (one w/roots) and that spot you're refering to, I noticed when it arrived this week. Thankfully it is firm...no mush to it. I just brought in the others and I see what you're talking about with the Rainbow. In my paranoia of over-watering I think the poor boy's thirsty. I have only been very lightly misting. I did a better job w/his misting esp since he'd been out in the heat and will cont. to do a "bit" more misting when taking care of him. I'll check to see if that wrinkling starts to dissapate (sp?). Thank you very much. Like having a Plummie MD via the web. :)
Hugs,
Chantell
Hi Chantell, it's no problem then since it is firm. My plumies have all kinds of brown spots, some from sunburn, but as long as the brown is not mushy, you are in good shape. I don't blame you about being cautious with the rainbow. I would be too. Lots of bottom heat and light misting for that one. You don't have to worry about the wrinkles as long as you are misting. Some of my cuttings get very wrinkled and stay that way until they get roots. I've had some look so bad that I didn't think they would recover, but as soon as they got roots, the texture improved 100 percent. You'll have flowers in no time. My pleasure, doll! Hugs back, Clare
Chantell,
In my zeal to get some plumies that were trying to bloom (IN THE DARK) outside, I had a real memory lapse about sunburn. I should have known, as I dealt with it before. Yes, it is harmless to the plant, but it can distort the tips and severely discolor them (stems too). However, the one area that is does its nasty work in is inflos. I lost both inflos on my Daisy Wilcox. This would have been the first blooms ever on this beautiful two branched plant I had been babying since last Spring. Sigh. I also lost a couple of other inflos on some others, but, tey too shall recover. Poor Daisy has black-brownish and pink tips now.
Words to the wise---- from the sorely reminded---LOL----always place your plumies in a shady location for a few days and THEN put them in full sun. I now have about 80 plants sitting under shade cloth, waiting to "harden up" some before getting the full solar blast. In due time they will be loving it, though. Think of them being a young child that has lived in a place with almost no sunny weather and stays in most of the year. Now take that child on a Daytona Beach, Florida vacation and what happens? LOL
Anyway, best wishes with your babies. I do wish they did have some SP-14 for plumies, though! :(
Brad
This is sooo true with any plant that have been housed for a time
Hardening off we call it.
What a bummer to loose all thse tips Brad...
Bummer...
Youll lead the charge later in blooms im sure 8D
Oooo, sorry about that Brad. Yes, good advice. I forget about sunburn too and almost never get it because my plumies are outside all year long, but I did get it on some cuttings that I received from a friend. I have several now that are nearly totally brown on one side. I didn't know that it could affect inflo's like that. So sorry to hear that about your DW. This is good information to know. Michael is right that you will lead the charge in blooms later on. I can't wait to see all the lovely pictures that you will post this spring and summer.
SP-15 for Plummies - now that's cute!! It'll be the pink kind they use for toddlers. Very good point, Brad thank you for bringing that up. (yikes I even had a black & white pit bull that would get sun burned where she was white) They've been right beside the windows on that side of the house (east) for last couple of weeks...so hopefully today's sunning didn't damage anything. I have faith in you guys that all this worrying will bring me those flowers and scent you all describe with such passion. I have the vision! :) Ok...honestly I have the hope...I'm telling you, I'm going to send out birth announcements...LOL
LOL, Chantell. Keep the faith:-) By the way, Duke smelled quite lovely today, and I definitely detected coconut. I think you will like Duke very much.
That's so sad...but I have to say does look like that patch on the Celedine. I check it every so often and it's still firm...whew! Glad to hear your Duke's smell is improving...was worried there for a bit. :) Hope your babies are doing ok despite that nasty cold front hitting ya'll. Is a lightening of the color green on the tips a sign of life? Don't know if I'm imagining it or not...but they seem to be turning a lighter green...brighter maybe is a better word. Not such a dark green...but more grass green? Does that make any sense?
What kind of 'grass'?
ummm...the legal kind...LOL
Chantell, sometimes, when you repot, if you expose a little more of the base than was exposed before, like if someone sends you a bareroot plumie, and you pot it higher than it was potted before, then that tissue isn't used to the sun and can become sunburned if put in full sun. I think Adeniums can get sunburned this way too when they are repotted and a little more of the caudex is exposed.
Duke smells very nice today. I definitely detect a coconut fragrance. It must have been mild before because of the time of year and climate that the blooms came in, which was November of 2004. I'm sorry I worried you. I do think you will like Duke. It is definitely darker than it was before also.
Thanks, Chantell. I think some leaves are about to drop on my plumies, but that is no big deal. They will grow back. Hmmm, a lighter green? I haven't heard about that. I've seen the tips become shiny just prior sprouting leaves. It could be from a lack of light? I'm sure they will thrive once spring comes.
Clare - glad to hear your plummies seem to be doing ok. I will definately watch mine and the sunlight. Just keep telling me all the good things about Duke...makes me happy, happy!!
Michael - are you pamalestrom on Ebay? Not that you have to worry about me bidding against you...Brad's plummies are absolutely beautiful but ending up way above my means...at least at this point in time.
Hey maybe I could sell one of the teenager on ebay? Kidding folks...just kidding...I'll end up with Child Protective Services bangin' on my door in 10 mins...LOL Some goober went and bit higher on ALL 3 of Hetty's 2 tipped AG....how rude was that? Couldn't he/she have been happy with one? If you happen to see RdAngel07 bidding on something...be kind to me...pleeezzz!
youll be up to your ears in plumeria before you know it.
Yes I am pamalestrom PA=Pennsylvania
if you really want to get plumies from places off of e-bay then you need to develop a little network which BTW you are doing.
Buying from a private seller is always preferrable to me.
All the bids you see me doing I ussually lose anyway.
Im homebound much of the time due to my asthma.
I get bored and go put bids on all my friends auctions heh...
I win enough of them for sure but most of my favorites have been private sales or gifts.
I have done quite well building my collection by jumping on opportunities as they arise.
Truly if you sit and wait you lose out on many of the special ones.
I tend to dive at them when they surface.
2 years ago I cut up Big Mamma, my celadine and was able to gift more than a dozen of her littlens to folks. I had a lot of brugs too. Ill be in a position to share more plumies next year.
I wish I had some big trees Id ship a box of cuttings to you LOL!
There are plenty of super kind and generous folks on various forums who would love to give you some sticks to get your love for these wonderful flowers to a boil.
If you see a special plant up for sale grab it.
If you dont, the burning thought of not having it will make you leap next time lol!!
I have to start listing some more items on e-bay to pay for my habit LOL!!
No worries...was just venting my frustration that ONE person NEEDED all three of those...that's all. I'm done now...thanks and sorry to all that had to read it. Bottom line is my space here (townhouse) is limited anyway until I win the lotto (guess I'd have to play it eh?) and buy a house with land...then I can fill it with Rotties and Plummies and such...yeah...now that would be my own slice of heaven...plus the Plummies wouldn't be messed with...LOL
It's all good...I've always agreed with whats meant to be...is meant to be. And hey I'M the ONE who won the 2 tipped Duke from Suki...yeah!
Hey, Chantell, sorry about that person that outbid you on three Aztec Golds. They must be a business or something to want all three of them, or maybe they just like Aztec Gold a lot! I'm with Michael. All of my plumies are still very small, and most of them only have one or two branches, but when I get some trees, I will do some pruning for sure and share with all my friends. Brad's web site will be up and running very soon, and you will be able to get some really nice Australian, Thai, and American cultivars at very reasonable prices there. Brad, can we give people the address of the web site yet? I think it is still a work in progress, and I'm not supposed to announce it yet. LOL! Hurry up, Brad! We've got people chomping at the bit here! LOL!
Chantell, did you try Florida Colors? I see that they have Aztec Gold for $18 for a rooted cutting. Luc and Carol are in Thailand right now, but they will be back after the 28th. You can still place an order at their web site, I am sure.
Congrats on the Duke!!
Duke is the smallest one in the pic (on the right)...it's the one I'm most looking forward to the blooms - the pics Suki posted of the blooms were so beautiful!!! I'm just being a cheapo...embarrassed to admit...but I'll just say it...single mom...FOUR teenagers...I can only justify spending so much. As I said though...I have limited room any-who-how...so it's all good...no worries!! I should just behave and see if I can get these babies to root (ok I actually got the Celedine rooted and Hetty has that one Miami Rose she's holding for me that's rooted - it's a decent start)
Brad had mentioned in a D-mail response that he was getting a web site ready...looking forward seeing it!!! His plummies are amazing!!! Love them!!! Thanks to you all for such kind words...very thoughtful. And yes...here in a month or so I may place an order w/FL Colors - they've got some really nice ones too!!
Uh-OH...
She's HOOKED!!
LOL!!
Keep saying they need AA for plant-a-holics...LOL
I may have to copy and paste this into a new thread but would one of you look at the photo again for me, please? Silly question probably but do different types of Plumerias have a different texture to their cuttings? The large one is the Rainbow from Packers - it looks "newer" then the other two...and deeper green color and the "skin" of the cutting doesn't feel "calloused" (sp?) like the Duke and the Celedine. The Rainbow's texture hasn't changed since I got it...it's not soft or mushy above or slightly below soil line - I've just noticed that the other two look "aged" for lack of a better word. Any thoughts on this?
There are many different types of 'Skin' or bark as well as leaf types.
No worries Lass. ;)
Knew you'd (or Clare) would come through for me...thank you, Michael!
Chantell, Michael is right that different cultivars can have a different appearance to their branches/trunk. Also, as plumies grow, green wood matures and changes and ages to hard wood.
