OK-
I've been lurking this forum for a little while now. My DH and I are talking about getting guineas and chickens when we move into our new place (end of march). I ordered the "gardening with guineas" book but have nothing on chickens.
I really don't know where to start.
Any resources you can recommend?
resources?
Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens is the best I've read.
Great Book, has everything you'd ever need, Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens
Available from Amazon.
I ordered my chicks from Murry McMurray, we talked about it in this thread:

A lot of people here highly recommend them. Check out that thread, they gave me lots of great advice!!
here is the hatchery's website

Here is their Garden Watchdog listing

Storey's is the best. But if you don't get a copy, hanging around here will get you a lot of info. too. Lots of good folks that care about their animals and are so helpful.
You might get some ear plugs if you are getting gunieas.. Wonderful fowl, just really noisy!
i am getting my chickens and guineas from:
www.xtremegamebirds.com
if htey aren't listed on the GWD, i guess that I should give them a rating LOL
i got my guineas from them last year and was very happy with them. my chicks are coming in on Tuesday, and i am not quite ready. i just couldn't pass up the opportunity to catch on on DG lol.
thankfully, the guineas do quite down when they get past their noisy TEENAGE years, but then again, you can count on them to make noise during mating season and anytime someone or something is near your property!
I have Louise Riotte's Raising Animals by the Moon, which has a large seciton on chickens, plus i called and requested info FREE from our County Extension Office, and then also there is FREE info and publications at www.attra.org
Looks like i need to put Storey's book on my list, and SOON!!!

Thanks everyone so much! I ordered Storeys book and will share my story once we get moved in--(One week- yipeeee)!!
Yippee, counting down the days. What fun.
bumping this great thread up, i had to look eup the name of the book i said i was going to get. doing a search on just storey publishing was turnign up too many LOL
Guineas get less noisy when past the 'teenage' years? We wish someone would tell Mrs. G that! If it were not for eating ticks she would not be here. I can't have a male as Moses, our peacok would fight with it too much. Been there, done that & do not want to repeat the experience.
hmm, well you know Mrs. G wishes she had a guineacock instead of a peacock. maybe she is mouthing off about that LOL
Too funny! You may be right Tamara! Perhaps the peacock is not as attractive to her. BAM
But they mate out of desperation every year! Usually produce a few of the ugleist, stupidist, mean birds imaginable which aren't even good eating.
not good eatin? oh, goodness, what doyou do with them?
BTW, I added a Chickens & Poultry category for the Bookworm today, since there were several chicken/poultry books in the Ag/Farming category: http://davesgarden.com/gbw/advanced.php?category=91&submit=Search
If you have any of these, or have read them, please share a comment for others ;o)
There are undoubtedly some poultry books not yet listed - feel free to add them (if you need help, let us know!)
There are also over two dozen hatcheries and poultry supply sources listed in the Watchdog: http://davesgarden.com/gwd/advanced.php?category=131&submit=Go
Again, if you have experience with any of these vendors, sharing what you know will help others!
great, thanks Terry! this forum sure is growng by leaps and bounds!
