A couple with names that I cannot find

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Here are a couple of cute AVs that had a name on them but I cannot locate them online. Anyone know where to find them? This first one is called Flash.

The second one is called Sunbeam. This little doggie looks like my Joshie did before he died. So I have decided to keep his memory alive by showing him in my photos. I hope you don't mind.

Thanks for the info Allison. I have decided to keep a notebook or journal on all of my violets, when I set then down, who I got them from, etc. So this information is really great. Do you think it is worth the $25 to get the First Class program so that I will always have that kind of info?
Thanks for the comment Don. He has really been missed and I found this little statue not long ago and thought I would use it in some of my photos.

Jesse - if you like working on the pc - why don't you do a spread sheet or an Access database? That's what I do and I love it. I keep track of my Gessies, seeds and wintersowing results and I also plan on tracking my trades on there as well.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse First Class is worth way more ! I use mine each day.
Laurie had a list of Av's she has on the computor mpt sire what program but when we were checking what plants she has to what I was giving her she had it all in the computer !
Making a list though a spread sheet or an Access databaseis not the same as First Class.
Now I know Laurie would have FC but her computor program will not run it.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Allison - First class lets you add your AV's? I thought it was a way of looking at all the registered ones.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Check their web site for more info... But the second (current) version does allow you to add descriptions and photos for AVs that aren't on the registered list... It also allows you to add notes to the official entries (so you could record when & where you acquired ones in your collection, for example), but i think the notes are limited to something like 60 characters, so it's no substitute for a propagation journal.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I think that First Class is something that I would like to get. I think it is worth the money. Does it cost to update it each year? Or is the updates free?

Jesse

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

thanks Jill

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I would still like to keep a journal, even with having the First Class program. And I do like to do things online but there is something weird about me that says it has to be done with pen and paper. I love writing things down. It helps me remember them more. So I will probably use all 3 ways of doing things and I will eventually develop a system that works for me.

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes you can add your's in. First class is different than just keeping a log of what you have I meant to say . And it is well worth the money and then some even if you have a different journal of some sort for keeping track of your plants. FC is different.
It has over 15 thousand African violets , Hybridizers, and the information about the pictures of most or even two pictures !
The information First Class gives and does for you is well worth the money Jesse. I use mine each day !
Mine crashed or something one time and I was without it for four days waiting on Joe Bruns to send me a new CD . Gosh I went crazy without it ! When I emailed Joe with the problem he put a new CE in the mail the next day and I did not even have to give him my address he had it . No fuss just as easy as can be.
I love it.
You can add plants and your own pictures..

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse when I joined the first year up-dates were included . And after it was ten dollars each year. I think it's the same ?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think I get free updates through June (purchased in December 2005), and then it's $10 annually. But if you end up letting your update subscription lapse, it sounds like you would be able to subscribe and get all the updates you'd missed as well as the current batch. There are lots of new photos and descriptions each time they issue an update.

If you join AVSA, you get a discount on the FC program. :-)

I think you would enjoy it !
Jesse your question was "Do you think it is worth the $25 to get the First Class program so that I will always have that kind of info?"
And I said and say after years of having it a great big " YES " :))
Allison

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I just joined the AVSA. I finally decided to join. I need all the help I can get and I figured that the AVSA would be a good place for knowledge. I think I will check our finances to see if I can get it. It sure seems worth the money.

Jesse

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Where do you guys get all of your tools or instruments that you use? Is there one place better than another. I need some nice tools to help me take care of my AVs, like a long set of tweezers. And that type of thing in a store is way too expensive. So where is the best place to get them?

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes Jill if you let you memebership lapse and you pay your $ 10.00 it brings you up to daye.
The price is $25 for members, and $37 for non-members " For USA Members"
The purchase price of First Class Version 2 includes 6 months of on-line database updates. (The database is updated every two months.) Your on-line database subscription can be extended for an additional $10 for one year, or you can purchase an updated database on CD for $10. (The CD version is updated and available every January.) If your subscription has expired, contact the AVSA office (avsa@earthlink.net) to extend your subscription. You will need to tell them your old password when you order.

When I joined I just paid the extra $10.00 then.
ou can also have them email you when it's time for up-dates. Last summer they had an extra up-date because their were so many photo up-dates ! It was aweseom :))

Thank you for this link. I am looking at it all so carefully. I can hardly wait to get mine.

Jesse

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Wow...they are GORGEOUS...especially the second one :) Where on earth did you get it?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Where did I get Ultra Violet Flash and Sunbeam? I got them at Walmart for $1.94 each.

Jesse

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh wow :) Our Walmart never has named AVS :)
If you ever see Them again..Would you pick one of each up for me?
They are gorgeous :)
I have ultra violet dusk which came from the Lovely Allison :)

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

If i see them I will get them for you. I am headed there now. So what else do I need to get rid of the fungus gnats that are down in my soil. I am going to get some Murphy's oil soap. I know that helps. Anything esle?

Jesse

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

You can use lysol in your water..though that is more for algae and what not.
Also neem oil helps keep the pests at bay :)
and carnivorous plants :)

Thanks Jesse :) if you find them..let me know..i can paypal you or send ya cash

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry I love Ultra violet Dusk ! I have one in bloom now. One of my favorite girl leaf plants :))
Jesse Ultra Violet sell their plants. A few others have them Jan ( Jannich) has them and sent me leaves which by the way Ultra violets progate real eas for me.
I did a search in FC for them.
The only thing Jesse your plants are not following descriptions like ours. One this can mean they were mis-labled or most liklt growing condtions. I can send out four African violets all from the same Mom to four different people and they may all look different.
An other example . I have grown several Slap Happy.
The las leaf gave me like 3,4 babies. Three of them ( now all from the same leaf same Mom grew up together) have barely any variegation.no pink , Just " One"has th deep pink foliage. ( this one I promised to Kenton)
Your Flash does not have white edges. and yor Sunbeam is not looming true either. All though on AVSA Sunbeam looks like single white.
Your Sunbeam looks more like
Ultra Violet Sunburst (Green Circle/Blansit) Single white pansy/pink ruffled edge. Medium green. Standard

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

:-) Lorry, I have my first carnivorous plants!! I picked them up at the Philly Flower Show this week. I have a lovely little sundew that has 2 crowns in the pot, so as soon as it's done blooming I'm going to separate it. It's up on my AV shelves but hasn't caught any gnats yet. Maybe I am doing too well with the Murphy's and the DE, LOL. (Nah. There's always a few of the little beasts buzzing about.)

I also got a sweet little venus fly catcher with gorgeous carmine color inside the traps... It scoffs at the smallness of fungus gnats & won't bother with them. I tried feedling it a tiny ant yesterday, but the silly critter managed to escape between the teeth of the trap... well, soon there will be plenty of bugs for it to devour! Meanwhile, I will scout around the house for spiders... a nice little arachnid might go down nicely, LOL.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I want one of the AVs that have the varigated leaves, some even have pink. That is what I really want most of all. DH would really love one of those too. If he gets paid again, I might just have to order one of those from Rob's.

Jesse

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

What does the neem oil do to kill bugs that the Murphy's Oil soap does not do?

Jesse

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Woohooo :) You go critter :) I have a sundew also and adore it :) I also have a purple venus and a green one :)
Also got myself a couple butterworts :)
They are great fun to watch!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Jesse..I can send you leaves of variegated varieites..I have heavens reflections which has cream and pink...I have others also but the names escape me :)

My favorite is strawberry daquiri which has INCREDIBLE white variegation :)

How about a trade for some of your ultra leaves :)

And yes Allison :) they are great looking plants :)

As far as the neem..I dont' honestly know..I use both neem and murphy's

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

The neem has been bothering my breathing some.
Jesse I'll send you some variegated plants and leaves in your box too :))

Crossville, TN(Zone 6b)

I purchased an UV flash from walmart. This is what it looks like: http://members.fortunecity.com/cnetter/gardens/ultra_violet_flash.html Yours is more pink.
Linda

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

It's hard to tell with cameras and lighting . But your Unltra Violet Flash might have sported Jesse or been marked wrong.
Jan " Janich " got a Flash she sent me leaves their growing wild and looks just like FC picture.

Lorry,

You have Dmail.

Jesse

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I got it Jesse and shot you another in return :)
Thanks sweetie!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse I was looking back at your picture and your Ultra violet Flash looks like the way my babies with Mom leaf are bloomining which is off and they came from Jan and her Mom plant is blooming true. Maybe it tends to loose it's edge ?
And your Ultra violet sunbeam though First Class has no picture looks like Ultra Violet Sunburst (Green Circle/Blansit) Single white pansy/pink ruffled edge. Medium green. Standard
in First Class. Maybe they had their names mixed up or their flowers mixed up ?
Here is FC picture of Ultra violet sunbeam .

Look what my Ultra violet Flahs babies are doing still with Mom and the flowers got really big :)) I know it's good they say to take them off so the baby can put all it's energy into growing plant . I use to . But now feeling flowers are so pretty I want to keep them and have never seen it slow the growth down.
So my plant is sorta blooming like yours and I know the Mom it came from was true blooming.

You have a gift, Allison. I have never seen babies bloom. and the first bloom is so delicately beautiful.
