(Keyring you out there?)
A week away and my streps went crazy! I laid down these leaves around mid January (photo from January) and today when I looked at them, there were babies all over the leaves coming up. So my question is, do I cut the mom leaves into sections and replant each little leaf?
There are babies coming up from just about each vein so I'm not sure how to repot or when.
Thanks!
Maybe I should travel more often all my AV's and Streps went nuts and I have pups everywhere. So JesseK, just travel and when you come back, all those leaves will have litle sprouts! LOL.
Strep Propagation Question
Laurie I like to let mine grow until their good size babies. I just let them grow crazy with Mom and nurse along as long as they want ! I have had ones grow on top of mom leaf no roots and I let it get pretty big until it had several little leaves. I trimmed away Mom but kept a little of her and I planted it like a sucker :))
With Streps there is no crown. Each leaf is considered a Plantlet. But I'm not good at taking them tiny little leaves away from their Mom and keeping roots with each. So I just let them grow big and full :))
Laurie,
What are those neat little black things on the right hand side?

editted to say that DH wants to go to CA some time next month but I was trying to figure out how to water my plants, especially the AV leaves.

Thanks Ali, they are about the size of a nickel or slightly larger. So, I'll leave them a while longer.
JesseK, that is a GroClone cloning machine. I do lots of starts in there. Some that are in there now, have been in too long and their roots are crazy! I must pot them up!

Oh my goodness so cool Laurie ~ How long have you has your GroClone cloning machine.? What have you
cloned ? How does it work ? Does it work good ?
My Streps I let them get inches and keep a few together .:))
Laurie pictures progating streps from sticky ! Good but I like handling mine larger

I do all kinds of starts in there, begonias, plectranthus, tradescantia, coleus etc. and I think I've had it for about 4 or 5 months. I got it about the time that you sent my first AV's.
I get roots in about 10-12 days. The lower tray holds water and a water pump which circulates the water. I add VF11 to the water along with hydrogen peroxide even though the company says water is enough. I find that it works even better by adding those two ingredients.
Once I get roots, i pot the goodies up into little 3" pots.
I think it works pretty darn good. I haven't tried AV's in it yet. I think the stem would have to be too long to reach the water. BUT you never know, I have all these new optimara AV's maybe I'll stick a leaf or two for a trial.
The little rings are just neoprene collars that hold up the plant
When the young plantlets are well established, i.e. the leaves are 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in.) in length, the old leaf can be carefully teased from the compost, along with its row of plantlets

thanks girlie!!
Laurie,
What kind of plants does this work on? Would it work on something that grows in a hanging basket, something like a Wondering Jew? Or is it just for things natually grown from roots, like the basil and stuff like that? Did that make sense?
JesseK
I'm barely here - busy at work this week. But anyway, what Allison said. Some would call it patience, others laziness.... but in any event it works well.
having said that, I wonder if picking them up and putting them down regularly would make them grow faster?

Too, funny
Keyring I don't get it ? Am I lazy. lol

Jesse just noticed your new name ! Great name !
just in case someone comes by and doesn't know what on earth I am referring to: http://www.greenculturesg.com/articles/sep05/gcs030905c.htm
JesseK you confused me. See what happens when I'm gone for a few days (your new name). I had to go look at your profile to see who you were. LOL, of course it's still early in the a.m. and I haven't finished my coffee yet.
yes, it works on lots of things, wandering jew and such work better and faster than rooting them other ways. But unless you are in a hurry to root lots of goodies, you can likely root the good ol normal way that works for you without the expense.
I like it because I like to propagate in general. I want quick results and want lots of trade material quickly.
Thanks Ali and Key for the tips. Duh, i forgot to look in the sticky. Slap me with a wet noodle.
You know Laurie - that works good for trade, because you don't have to clean off the plant when you ship it. I wonder if the gel 2 root will work as quickly as your setup?
ypur we;cp,e Laurie hope it helps. Their as easy as can be to root. And within 3 months you'll have lots of flowers too !
Am I lazy I'm confused. lol
your welcome Laurie hope it helps. Their as easy as can be to root. And within 3 months you'll have lots of flowers too !

Well, if I ever strike it rich, which is not likely the way things are now, but if I do, I think I will have to invest in one of those cloning machines. I love gadgets of any kind. My husband and I have more gadgets, mostly technological, because we love that kind of thing. But I must say that it is a gadget that I will tell DH that I just have to have.

actually Jesse, there's a link in the propagation forum on how to make your own from a rubbermaid container!
If I can find it, I'll post it.
Here ya go

Thanks Laurie. This will be interesting.
Jesse
interesting...doesn't look to hard to construct. It probably only costs a bit less to make it yourself.
Isn't this neat ! New excitng things all the time :))
