are these safe around children and dogs?

Yes, they are poisonous, but if you teach your pets and children not to eat anything other than what you feed them, there isn't a problem. If you are concerned, educate your pets and kids by taking them to the plant, getting their attention and telling them "NO"! over and over, then WATCH THEM! Most plants are poisonous, in some way, to mammals, so be smart - EDUCATE!

I have 3 dogs and a yard full of potted brugs..(and I mean full!!). All the pots are on the ground and I have NEVER had any problems with the dogs eating the brugs. The same with deer i upstate NY. I have heard that the leaves and flowers are extremely bitter so at first nibble they are trained never to touch them again. I don't know about the rest of the country but in NY deer have become a major problem to household gardens. The deer eat almost anything but they never touch my brugs.

Pets know whats edible and what isn't by scent, kids are a different matter! LOLWould take a fair amount of leaves to poison someone I doubt if any kid would eat enough of the nasty tasting leaves to die from it.
