Hi, hi!
Thanks for the great welcome! I've never encountered such friendly people on a message board before! Super!
Little about myself:
I've been living apartment style without a balcony for seven years now... but finally I've moved into a house and I have a nice yard to actually grow anything I want! The yard needs a bit of work but that's to be expected. This year I'm planning on growing some veggies and a lot of flowers! Because many of my favourite flowers are biennials I'm going to be mixing them with a lot of annuals so my garden has some colour. I am planning on working in extra perennials each year. I also love vines, and am hoping to smother the deck with morning glory. :-) As for veggies I'm starting small, and only planting what I know I will eat. I'm not sure about the soil quality, or local pests, but it will be a learning experience. Plus, I won't have much money for the garden this year -- the house itself also needs work, and I need new furniture -- so new garden beds etc. are out of the question.
I'm almost finished my masters degree in plant biology at the University of Waterloo. So I'm not a complete newbie when it comes to seed propagation, but I still have to figure out specifics on each type of plant.
And in case you are wondering -- My thesis work is on winter rye, a very cold tolerant cereal. I'm am analysing some of the genes that allow the plant to live very cold (-20C) temperatures.
Good to see you here heavenlybubbles!

Welcome, heavenlybubbles. Good to see you here. Is it OK if we drop the formality and call you by Bubbles?
Bubbles is fine! Ha ha!
Welcome, Bubbles, from one of the Ottawa crew. Your thesis sounds very interesting, lots of potential for northern gardeners!
Hello and Welcome heavenlybubbles! I too, went from apartment living to home ownership last year and it's a blessing to have the space to indulge a gardening hobby. I'm starting to wonder how I survived so long without a real garden, lol.
So I got to ask; how did you pick your DG name?

Hi heavenlybubbles,
Interesting thesis work. Congratulations on the new house and good luck as you start your gardens. What types of biennials are you growing? We look forward to some pictures of your gardens as they develop.
