Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

These amphibians are a nuisance at night preventing sleep. They make such a lot of noise!

lol they are soooooo cute though. my closest friend is obsessed with frogs she buys everything with frogs on it she sees. send them her way lol. i love frogs also we have a large pond that is covered with them also. ours are very noisy during the summer. i was checking on some plants yesterday and noticed some huge tadpoles that look like they are on steroids!!!!!! so i am sure they will be plentiful this year for me as well. the picture is sooooo cute he looks proud of himself doesn't he? Hope they let you sleep tonight.

Dinu....I wish you lived closer, I would take them off your hands! I need extra frogs/tadpoles for my pond and water plants. We had an unexpected freeze, and it killed all of them. Blah.....

it has gotten cold here this winter but ours seem to still be hopping around. i guess they are used to it here.

Hornick, IA(Zone 4b)

That is a little different breed of frog than what I am familiar with, so not sure how loud they get. As for me I wait for them to come to my pond " really enjoy the deep
BRRrruummmm. BRRRrrruuuuummmm of our big green bullfrogs in the evening.
It is rather soothing, to hear other creatures making their joyfull noises.
5 to 10 good croaks and I can be sound asleep the pond is practicly right by the house just the patio between it and the house. That may take another three months yet as it is still winter here. It has been really mild this year no really deep snow only 2 or 3 slick days, sort of like in the spring tempreture wise.
Don't know how to solve your problem though. Maybe you need bigger fish. so they could have a feast on frog legs, LOL hmmm.

Anyone who wants to send me a Ziploc bag full of tadpoles for trade or postage, please contact me. I had saved all of my tadpoles from my water dish gardens during the freeze, brought them all inside my sunroom. After the freeze was over, I put them back outside. About a week later, we had a one night unexpected freeze, and every single one was belly up by morning. Very sad....We've had a hard time keeping the frogs that belong here, actually here. The invasive Cuban Tree frogs have been taking over, and really ruining the natural frog population. They eat anything in sight, other frogs, koi, goldfish, etc.

Mary i will wait till it warms more and see if i can get you some. i am not making any promises but if possible i will share. We had tons last year they sounded like a musical band at night and our neighbors on both sides have large ponds and it sounded as if they were communicating with each other lol.

Yes that is a weird looking frog looks like a cross between leapord frog and a toad ;>)...maybe someone here can identify it ...probably native to your country ... I love all my frog noises ...the bull frogs seem to be surviving the best with the enviormental killings of all amphibians happening you should be happy to have 'em. Bull frogs seem extreemly hardy and adaptable but are bullies and displace the leapords eventually which is sad ..I like my leapords the best and the tree frogs ...Although the tree frogs, even for me, are a bit much at night with their shrill call especially if they are clinging to my brick house wall next to my bedroom window which seems often the case!!!...but I'll take 'em over NO frogs anyday!!! Hi all - I just put in two Bullfrog tadpoles last year, and saw a couple of those frogs that bury themselves in the ground (I'm not sure they go in the water at all). Since it's still so cold here, I'm not sure if they survived or not - is there anyway to tell? Are they pretty hardy? I saw two little green frogs in the pond also last fall cause one got on the wrong side of the net and I had to save him. What should I look for, or do they just kinda show up when it's warm enough for them. I know I'm pushing spring here, but your pictures, Dinu, and all the conversation just has me excited! Dax

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Dax.....If you have a mud bottom, and 24" deep water, usually the water frogs will hibernate (as long as the water doesn't freeze solid to the bottom) They will show up on their own when the weather starts to warm up during the day AND night. They need warmer evenings to start waking up for the season. We have had 50 nights, and high 70 days (a few cool days here and there still) but I've seen a few very slooooow moving toads around in the plants. One large tree frog who was still so slow and numb he actually drown when he climbed the wall along my pond and fell in.

Oh good - yep - I got plenty of mud down there and it's 3' deep. Since we're still in the 20 - 30's at night and only 40's during the day I'll just be patient. At least I haven't seen them floating on the top!! Thanks much for the info, MerryMary - Dax

Last night was better, less noisy. Sometimes, when the female is laying eggs, the male sits on top of her. I wonder why this phenomenon happens. Oh yes, I have taddies by the hundreds. And I see those little babies out on the ground hopping nowhere! I'm afraid they will become too many to be peaceful and so I kill [though I hate killing] many little ones.

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

Glad to see they weren't as noisy last night.

My bullfrogs do not hibernate in any of my ponds. The deepest being 3.5'. They burrow down in the soft dirt and hibernate. I have disturbed a few while trying to divide perrenials during cold weather.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

I saw a few listed on Ebay! Very expensive for 2 bullfrog tadpoles!
(Which really isn't the kind I'm interested in anyway)

Springfield, IL(Zone 6a)

I have a gizzion bullfrog tad poles in my ponds ...but shipping them would be a hassle...anyone wanting any that live in my area just email me you are welcome to stop by and have as many as you have time to catch ...if I scoop up some leaves with my net from the bottom of any of my ponds I get probably 10-15 of them...I am over populated PLUS so let me know... David

Hornick, IA(Zone 4b)

David I would like to accept a few, however we are not planning on passing your way, till sometime in May. Second or third week. But we are planning on attending the Iowa roundup. Could be someone their will have some for trading.
I don't think they will be getting rid of their tails for a while yet, judgeing from the weather. The algae has not began to bloom yet in my pond but I have a lot of muck on the bottom left from last year. I just haven't gotten around to cleaning yet.
A little procrastination and spring fever combined. Not to mention a nasty cold right now, has me down for the count.
Maybe the next warm spell. I always count on one more blast around the first day of spring. No ice on the pond (right now ) have checked on the fish several times. anxious yes but nope can't feed them yet. They are fat and sasey and love to stir the bottom up so I can't watch them very long. The largest ones don't mind just the mid sized ones. Then too I have come up with several black koi one of the males is a rather large redish black so that will happen untill I decide to isolate him. I think he is 10 or 12 years old. I think if my count is close I have fifty from 2ft. down to 2".
in about 3000 gal pond. Had one bull frog last year always enjoyed his joyfull singing.
Hey fire back at me I'm new to DG but have been playing with this pond for 5 or 6 years and still haven't compleated it. I know I wand to cleat out the catails. or at least cut them way back to one or two???? Maybe all the way!
Anyway we will be heading to the Carolinas about the middle of may, It would be a nice stop for on the way back That is if they still have their tails at that time???

I didn't know frogs were on sale! There is a proverb. "Like frogs in a weighing balance". It is applied whenever they find trouble forming a group of people together at the same time. Hope my description is understandable. The moment you keep one or two, the others hop out.
Dinu

Hornick, IA(Zone 4b)

Dinu:
I'm thinking you mean they multiply like rabbits. LOL

Russ

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

No, Russ. Suppose you want to call a few people for a gathering. Imagine they are frogs. What do frogs do when you keep them in the pan? They jump out. If you keep them back, the others jump out. Hope you got the meaning now?
Dinu

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

All I know is I need some in my pond.....had thousands of tadpoles last year, this year, not a single one. I'm hoping when the weather stays consistently warm, they will once again find their way, and avoid Dinu's theory of jumping back out!
I need them to stay.

frogs are really being hurt by our messing up the enviorment IMHO ...They seem to be like canaries in a coal mine.... I have seen some really weird deformaties on several of my frogs except the bulls...I guess the survival of the fittest ...and the bulls are "hunks" thats for sure!!!...As I said my ecosystem is the bulls eat the leapords the snakes eat the bulls and the dogs eat the snakes ...seems to be working as far as my population control...or maybe it's just my lazy ponding methods ;>) David

This little fellow could not get a partner, but that natural urge was there. There were already 3 of the ladies engaged (probably laying eggs) and the partners riding on the backs. But two were left alone. One chose to grab a plant!! I took this picture before I left for work. When I returned home for lunch, to my surprise, it was still holding the plant!!!
