Leaf Cuttings Texas Style

Lilburn, GA

You will need:

AV leaves cut diagonally 1"long stem
styrofoam cup 8oz
grit
AV mix
tray

Make 3 holes on the bottom of the cup
Make 5 holes at the sides of the cup about 1/2" from the bottom
Make 5 holes at the sides of the cup 2" from the bottom

Fill the bottom of the cup with grit until between the first and second set of holes ( about 1 1/2" from bottom)
Fill the cup with compost. Do not press, gently tap the cup until the compost sets.
Insert the leaves diagonally, the stem should not be buried down in the compost vertically. Gently lie the leaf until the stem is covered. It should be lying shallow, not deep down in the compost.
Fill tray with enough water so it covers the bottom set of holes but not the second from the bottom.
Put under lights or bright position away from direct sun.
This is it!!!

This is what I learned this afternoon at the Greater Atlanta Violet Club. The lady who taught us is an accomplished propagator. (forgot her name).

She says that this technique gives you a higher success rate.

sounds like the Strawberry hanging basket method......with garden seeds..one could take a plastic bag...putting holes on larger scale like you suggest and have a hanging garden that way...especially nice with petunias....good idea...thanks for sharing anna

Stownes, it is the size of a normal cup of drink. I saw lots at Walmart this afternoon.

I was just going by what I thought I had seen about starting the plants in small cups, but if the 8 oz works for this method, will surely give it a try :-)

Sounds like you had a great time Spider ! Please take pictures setting up your cups and how they grow. They use Grit ? Not Perilite ?
What kind of soil-less mix do they use is it light ?
I know a lot of people use Texas style potting. Theres links in our Sticky too !
I can't wait to see your babies. Nice selection of babies and you can't beat the price !

Lilburn, GA

Violet, what she used was called Promix, I think or something like that. She did not use perlite but grit from a feed shop. The mix was very very light.

Stownes, two inches of the cup is taken with the grit so in the end, the plant will have less space.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

promix is very good...but fairly expensive...

Pro-mix is great I love it. I use to get it from a Whole sale place. They use to buy if there when I went to local group. You could get the real big bag Bob like Perilite but plastic it was very low price . If you bought a hundred $$ I remebered they delivered.
I never heard of grit > in Av soil.

Lilburn, GA

Violet, grit is not mixed with the soil, The compost is mixed with perlite. The grit is put at the bottom of th ecup in a layer, to keep it moist.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

allison they have that big bag of pro mix at Busy Bee where Lorry lives for about $35.00....i saw it there..and like it..but feel that's over priced there

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh ok they do mix perilite with the Pro-Mix ! I know some people who do Texas Style potting put Perlite in the bottom. Grit that's different but heh if it works !
I'll tell you what I like 3 oz. cups and sometimes when we can't find them hubby gets 5 oz. It does give the babies more room . I was always told if the cup was smaller they'd root faster but to be honest I see no difference. Now I have these tiny little one inch pots I put suckers in and they root and grow real fast. I also like to grow miniatures in them !
But 8 oz. cups seem large ? First I've heard of this.
Bob I would pay that for large bag of pro-Mix ! Is it real large ? I think I paid around $32.00 for it couple years ago. Wish I could get it around here.
I've never heard of Busy Bee's before.

I get promix at Home Depot - but they only carry it in the spring. I think a 3 cu foot bag, but because it's compressed it's a whole lot. I still add perlite and vermiculite to it, though, because what they carry is the seed starter version of Promix.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW my husband has tried with no luck. Yes I alsways added both to my Pro-mix, blus worm casting, bat guna , kelp meal and more. It got expensive to do all this so latly I just add Perilte and still bat poop sense I have some left.

Spider
That makes perfect sense to me. May give it a try. Wonder if any specific method is faster?

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Will head over to HD later to see if I can find the Promix grit and give this a try.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes I'd like to be able to find a big bag of Pro-Mix local again but we have had no luck :(
Please take records and pictures and how long it takes to get babies ! Thanks :))
