I like this one the best so far, not so messy looking.
Why are there so many cool plants around here and I have no room??
Talking about BOP: Strelitzia juncea
GGGGRRR! I have one of these too I ordered from a grower in Pasadena a year ago. slow to grow and not quite ready to bloom. The flowers will be the same as the regular BOP.
REALLY!? I have never seen it. I love the narrow "not so shoddy looking" leaves. Will have to look for that. Thanks Kell.
Kalola its name is strelitzia parvifolia Juncea from Port Elizabeth South Africa. Very slow growing type. Aloha nui loa

I didn't even notice the smaller potted ones there until I just looked at the pictures again. The big pots were $250 for 15 gallon. I really liked their looks. If I go back to get the Raphidophora I will check out the price of the smaller ones. They all had buds.
The problem with this nursery is they never go for the 1 gallon size of things. They have some great plants though. I get lots of my phormiums there.
They are not accomadating at all there, nasty attitude.
Well kell, you can buy the seed if you're willing to wait awhile! They can take a year to germinate, but some do after 30 days, 4 to 5 years and you could have flowers!
I have some S. nicolai, also a S. reginae 4 years now from seed. It has got to a point where I MIGHT get flowers, if not this year perhaps next, and it didn't cost me much!
kell the place I got mine was $35 for a large division, down Pasadena way.
LOL Janet, you must feel like a proud Momma looking at that beautiful baby!! But I must tell you I am into instant gratification. I always look at it as though I am buying time which is normally impossible to do.
Oh Kyle, you have the right connections!! I am not going to buy this one, I have no room for it. We have so many BOP in my neighborhood, I get my fill just driving around. You need to post a pic of yours flowering, and I will get my thrill that way!
Can someone help me get one???? Point me in the right direction....I WANT ONE...or ten, doesn't matter!!!
LOL Carol. You are coveting plants I have here, it should be the other way around. Let me ask if they can get me a gallon can but it sure won't be cheap at this nursery.
I often see small plants, about 9-10" tall in 4" pots for only £5, that is around $8.75, at my local garden centre. I have to do it the hard, long, slow way! But I do know they are healthy and will survive, time will pass anyway and if I didn't do it I wouldn't have the plant!
I just saw a S reginae in PF that kennedyh put on, it had it's first flower after 15 years! If mine takes that long I sure will be a proud Momma! They are SUPPOSED to flower from 4/5 years.....oh well
GREAT...Kell...thanks. It could probably travel well bare root.... Perhaps they have smaller ones...I learned that there used to be that BOP around here but no longer.....I wonder why.
TIP: I just learned this yesterday...when your BOPs have finished blooming, or you want to 'cut' one for the house, pull UP on the stem...pull it out of the leaf sheath...that way you won't have a bunch of amputees in the clump.
Carol
Years ago I dug out a HUGE BOP that clashed with my pink & lavender blooms, now that I am swinging around to the warmer colors, I would love one but I like the looks of this one much better.
They do get so huge around here don't they Sue? I haven't seen a huge white one though, I sure would like too. Suddenly the whites are in all the nurseries, but not flowering.
In 15 years Janet, I will not remember that I even had plants and my son will come with a huge dumpster and bye bye plants. LOL. I am being dragged kicking and screaming into the world of clivia. At first I said no way for it takes 5 years from seed to flower, too long a commitment but now I am doing seeds. I do not know how I get so involved with these plants. Against my will too.
I will ask for you, Carol. I have asked for other plants there in the past in a gallon pot, as I recall a gunnera for Chele and Anna. They were so rude. And then I found 2 great ones at another nursery cheap. Showed them. LOL
It's the nurturing thing kell, like watching children grow. The excitement of seeing a seed germinate, you have brought it into the world!
Heres the place in L.A> that sells them. They have the Elliots yellow too all yellow flowered BOP.reg leaves.

Oh Kyle, I really need that. LOL. And he has LOTS of clivia too. I wish he had more pics though.
I bought my S. juncea from him. He sent a very large division - I was very pleased!
I hope to hear from them soon!!!
Let us know what he says Carol. He has a good list but no pictres of what I am interested in.
He said he could ship bare root... Lots of information!!!!! I would like to know how big the clump is....?
Carol
Mine was 1 large fan about three feet tall or so (and he had cut it back to fit in the box) with a small fan about a foot tall.
kewl beans!
What a wonderful odd plant. I have only had mine for 1 year now. Their is a south american species that gets monsterous. Is anyone growing it? I have seeds sprouting somewere.
Cool looking, Kyle! With flowers on similar spikes really looks great.
Brian, a giant one would be fun to see.
Brian...would any of your sprouted seeds want to live in Hawaii? Lots of room to grow it here.
Definitely need to buy that BOP...
Ah, so much time and so little money!!!
Carol
All species of Strelitzia come from South Africa. Juncea is from the Natal near Port Elizabeth. Takes at LEAST 8 years from seed..this species grows slower than other types. When small the seedlings look like the regular BOP they don't get the reed like leaves till several years down the road. This one was at the San Diego zoo years back..notice the old flowers in upper right section of the plant.leaves were 6 feet tall
Aren't we so lucky we can buy time for ourselves and our passions.
Kell, so right!!!! That Strelitzia has such a perfect shape and form to foil others in the garden...can't wait til I get mine!!!
