CLOSED: I promised cannas to ????????

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

I am going to be digging up tall red cannas with reddish leaves (may be Australia) and some shorter yellow cannas with light green leaves. I told a couple of people that I would share with them, but I've lost the threads on which those promises were made.

So.....if you are one of the ones I promised, or if you are someone interested in these plants, please let me know. They'll be ready to go in a week or two.

diane i am not one of the ones you promised the canna to but i might be interested in the red leaved canna. what are you looking for? thanks. barb

Diane, same with me...I'd love some of the red leaved canna....willing to trade and/or send postage. Mary

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

barb and Mary--I think if you just pay me for postage that would be good. I'm on disability right now and have a lot of bulbs and plants to get planted already and have to get help to do any of it. The one exception to that would be if you have any mini/micro plants that will live in a terrarium. I am converting an aquarium and haven't anything yet that will work in there very well.

I'll let you know when the plants are ready to ship. The big red ones have been growing next to our heat pump and in the hot months with all the hot air coming out, they just get so ugly. Some of the yellow ones have multiplied a lot so need to thin them out.

I'll be talking to you ladies later. I'm glad these plants will be going to good homes. What else do you grow?

Diane

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Diane....I'm interested in the red leaved cannas, not really any interest in the yellow, so please share those with someone else. I have bromeliads, african iris, spider plants, crinum bulbs, mother in-law tongue, and salvia. For smaller terrarium plantings, I have green or white syngonium.

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Mary,
You did me a big favor today and don't even know it!!

I have a large Arrowhead Ivy that I just love and had been planning to research PF to find out its real name. When I was looking up your suggestion of syngonium and crinum---well, there was my big ivy. It was given to me nearly dead a long time ago and I have loved it back to beauty. It lives on my front porch from April 1st to the first frost. It gets morning sun and afternoon shade. It is a big hit in my neighborhood. In the winter it lives on my bedroom floor in front of some big sunny windows. It doesn't grow during that time, but it doesn't need to, for heaven's sake. So now I have that plant identified thanks to you.

So, since the only experience I have is with this giant, I'm interested in what you have that would live in a terrarium.

Diane...DMail me your address, and I'll send you a piece of each, both the green and white. I don't know how large yours is, but as they get larger, the "arrow" shape can add other fingers to the hand, and be multi lobed for each leaf grouping. They now come in various pink shades as well. I love mine, the green one goes all across my back wall, so it gives a tropical background feeling to that corner of my yard. Years ago, I cut the roots off thinking I was going to take it down, and it has continued to grow, even without them! You of course, can keep them pot sized, but I love mine growing very large and lush. They also bloom a very odd tropical aroid bloom. I love them!

Diane,

I'd be interested in whatever you may be thining out of your gardens. LMK

OK Mary,
If they get very large, I will have a bit of a problem. I'll have to make another big pot for the porch, which is the only safe partially shaded spot I have. Then I have to make room for that pot inside in the winter. I'll look at my big plant again in the morning and see what it's doing. I've cut it back year after year and given away the cuttings to keep it from getting so big I can't handle it.

Swoznick-
Right now the only thing is the cannas. Are you interested in some of those?

I have quite a few things to get planted and I'm hoping that the teenagers I have arranged to come help me this year with the garden can come this week during their spring break. There are still dead stalks out there (sage, etc.) that I never got cut back in the fall. I was rearranging the main flower bed when I had to stop working out there, and now I'm not even sure where I am with that.

What's up in your garden now? Daffodils?

I found some beautiful purple/blue flowers along the side of the house today and could not figure out what they are. Thought and thought and finally remembered that I had planted some "Mr. Fokker" anenomes there. They are beautiful!! Other than those I have daffodils and dianthus blooming and a big old rose bush that's going nuts already. Tulip tree done already.

Diane,

I'm very new to gardening but would love a few cannas. Can you spare some if I send you postage?

God bless,
Pete

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Yes, Pete, I certainly can. I'm not sure how many I have until they are dug up, but I know there will be a lot of them. The clumps have been multiplying in one area. The other area is in front of the big heat pump and they've tried hard to make it there, but there's just too much heat for them. So they haven't multiplied as much.

I am hoping to get them dug by the end of this week. My teenaged helpers will be on spring break and so I will let you know what we end up with.

What are you growing now? All new garden? Veggies and/or flowers? Big yard/small yard? Shade or sun?

Diane

Pete....the beauty about cannas is they are very easy to grow, even for a new gardener. Every now and then you may get a catepillar or 2, but nothing different than any other plant in your yard. They're beautiful, especially now that they come in so many colors (even the leaves)

AND........they don't take a bunch of water.

Diane-

I'm so new that besides last year's small vegetable garden, I'm just beginning to scratch the surface on what I can plant and grow. As the landscaping around my home is pretty sparce and the soil in the existing planting beds is pretty poor, I've been working on amending the soil so that as spring comes around, I can make some decisions on what to plant.

My initial inclination is to start simple and see how green my thumb can be. As I read more I do find I like the look of various leafy plants (non-flowering) such as hostas, elephant ears, caladiums, with some flowering plants planned for added effect.

I'm really working with a blank slate and trying to determine what will grow best in the HOT summer in and around Memphis.

Pete

P.S. Thanks for your kind offer, I will send you D-mail so you can tell me how much postage to send as well as anything else that you need to mail.

We have very hot and humid summers here, too. I did not do research when I first started, so wasted a lot of work and money. You are being much smarter than I was.

I have found that butterfly bushes do well and will really draw birds and butterflies. Cannas are a good choice. I love hostas, Oriental and Asiatic lilies, and daylilies as they are low care, look pretty in the heat and show off very well. Salvias do well and the dark purple ones (have forgotten the name) are perennial. I had 'way too much trouble with big rose bushes, but have had great success with miniatures. Verbena and lantana do well in really hot areas that you might have, as will dianthus. Elephant ears, ferns and caladium have been good and I love the foliage. Irises are really good. I have a lot of trouble trying to grow dill, but other herbs have done well. I stick them in here and there along pathways. Datura do very well but you have to be careful if you have small children or pets that might take a bite as they are poisonous. Their foliage is nice even when they aren't blooming, but they die all the way back in the fall. I also grow Pineapple Sage, which is mostly for the hummingbirds late in the summer, because it gets so big we could not possibly eat all that sage. Its foliage is fragrant, as is rosemary. I have them planted where I can brush them with my hands as I go by--love their fragrance.

If you need vines, I can send you some white moonvine seeds. They are attractive and fragrant, with bright white flowers at night. Morning glories should do well, as will Red Cypress vine (also for hummingbirds) but they have nice little red flowers. You should be able to grow honeysuckle, too.

I also have some seeds for Texas Star Hibiscus (see picture), which have interesting foliage, seed pods and flowers.

I have tried over time to get my beds to where something is in bloom all the time from March through December. I'm just about there.

Diane,

I'm just getting back to this post. It did'nt set in my "watched threads" the other day.. Sorry my reply is late. I am starting over in a new place. I've been able to bring limited plants with me - and I had to dig them in cold weather - so not sure what's gonna make it. Anyway - if you're diggin and dividing and need a place for them to go - well I'm the place... I have an acre lot that has basic foundation shrubs - and they're young. The cannas would be great - and just remember me when you have extra stuff.. I'm sorry that I don't have anything growing well enough to offer in trade - but we could work out a "future" deal if you like..

Thanks!!

Suzy

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

OK, Suzy.

I'll let you know when things are ready to go. I've not spoken with my helpers yet, so don't know for sure what date we are talking about, but I should see them today or tomorrow and then I'll let you know.

Hi Diane,
Have been looking for yellow cannas for a while. I have the tall red with green leaves if you would like some.

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

ansonfan--You've got all you want of the yellow. I'll pass on getting any more for now, but thanks.

To everyone: My digger helpers have gone out of town until Monday, so everything is delayed by a little bit. Don't give up!! Please make sure I have your addresses, either in the address exchange or dmail me. The clumps will be going straight from the ground into your boxes. Thanks.

Diane

Burlington, NC(Zone 7b)

Diane,

How much postage should we send to you?

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Hold on until I get them packed. I don't mind if you all pay me after the fact. I'm just not sure what to say at this point.

Diane
