Is compost to strong for starting seeds in ?

I would much rather buy a truckload for 15.00 vs a 10.00 3 cubic foot bag of potting soil...... but I was concerned that the compost might be to rich for seeds....?

I could test the next load I get but again I wouldn't know what to look for .....

Any info would be greatly appreciated as it could save me lots of money.... Thanks

Compost is actually very low in nutrients, it will likely harbor organisms that cause damping off, and will also likely hold too much water for air-loving roots of seedlings. Jiffy seed starter is a sterile mix of peat and vermiculite & a good choice for starting seeds. I also often start seeds in vermiculite & begin fertilizing at emergence of first real leaves.

Thanks so much for the advice Al.... I'll stick with what I've been using sounds like the cost is worth paying for the right mix.......
