Welcome to Dave's Garden and the Canadian Gardening Discussion forum livilou! I believe we have two other subscribers from NS, but we don't hear from them often here. You could Dmail them directly. Find them by going to the Memberlist page and searching by Canadian province. --Ginny on Ontario's West Coast :-)

Welcome to Dave's Sue, this is a great site with lots of great people who visit the Canadian Gardenng forum - some even from the US, given the gardening conditions some of them share with us. FYI, if you want to find out what your hardiness zone is, just click on the link below, and and click on the "2000 Plant Hardiness Zones" map. I think you can figure it out from there, but if you need help, just dmail me and I'll try to walk you through it. Looking forward to seeing more pics of your gardens once the weather warms up.

Hi Roselaine, I have 2 climbing roses on that arbour that are a couple of years old. We had an awful time with vandalism and that is a new and improved arbour as the other one just got beaten down. Those poor roses have had a hard time, but are starting to recover. I also have 3 clematis planted on it.

Sue that picture at the top is from last summer right not taken recently? I'm moving to NS tomorrow. I bet I would be welcome cause I'm a 1/2 scotsman. Right lots of scots.

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Soferdig - the community I live in was settled by a Scottish rogue, the Laird of McNab. So you being 1/2 Scottish, you'd be welcome here too. Well, Ok, I guess half of you would be..... ;0)

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

So a Scottish "rogue" then the 1/2 that is welcome is the german half. What is a Laird?

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Laird = Lord or landowner. The story goes he fled his creditors in Scotland, fanangled a whole township by promising to settle it with highland clansmen. He created a fuedal system and ruled with an iron fist - the settlers ousted him after 18 years. There are many Scottish descendants who would welcome you. You have to be able to play the bagpipes tho...

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

As an American Scot I "hum" the bagpipes. I am reading a book about the early days of New York, Manhattan Island. It is called "An Island In the Middle Of The World". It is a new history of the dutch ruled Manhattan Colony. You probably remember Peter Styvesant. Actually you always need an Iron Fist to keep the focus on what is needed and stop people from getting off track. But of course you need a Good Idea to begin with. Note Saddamm Hussein kept things in control in Iraq but....

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

I wasn't familiar with Peter Styvesant, but I googled him found out he was known as Peg Leg Pete. Well, our Scotsman had *two* legs, imagine what an iron fist he was!

comebychance, NL(Zone 5b)

welcome to Daves sue.hope you weathers better then ours in nfld.
have fun in this site its realy fun.great people.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Peg leg Pete is the British historical version of what happened. It is really interesting how the Dutch influnced Manhattan even today. Liberal thought was what started the way NYers think and the dutch were very accepting and liberal in their day. Pete actually was a genius on how he planned and made community inprovements. Much like the Mayor of today. Oops I got off track. Sue what is your last day of frost in Halifax? Do you have over 120cm of rain/yr?

Soferdig: the Dutch side of my family originally immigrated to New York.........and then some of them left for better parts north!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 0 :)

Hello Soferdig! Cead Mile Failte!!! 'A hundred thousand welcomes' in Gaelic!
Where are you settling in NS? And yes that picture is actually last spring..sigh. Today the weather is unbelievable..it is 5 above and sunny, just like spring. I am in Halifax and we don't have to worry about frost after early mid May. As for the rainfall, I'm not sure. All I know is it helps to be a duck sometimes! Seriously, we do usually get a lot of rain in spring, but this fall was rainy and so was last summer, so it's hard to tell. Officially, I don't know the stats, but I would love more sun myself. The growing conditions are great and probably be a little different from Montana (?). We have acidic soil which you have to work with as it's too hard to fight. But there are a lot of amazing plants that do well i.e. Rhodies, Azaleas, Pieris, heaths and heathers to name a few. There are some awesome nurseries and clubs you can join that cater to these plants. If I can be of any help, let me know. We have the Atlantic Rhododendron Society which is great. Plant sales and great speakers...a wealth of information.

I forgot to mention the Scottish contingent. There is a big one including ourselves. We belong to the North British Society and my husband wears his own clan kilt and yes, the sound of the bagpipes 'brings a tear to me eye!
