Awesome water lilies and lotus very cheap!!!! MUST read.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Moodene ordered some lotus from texaswaterlilies.com and seemed please. I went to their site and nearly fell on the floor with the prices. I decided what the heck, I will give it a shot. Tommy responded back to my email in a very timely manner. I ordered 10 water lilies and 3 lotus tubers. They arrived 4 (yes, 4) days later. For the ridiculously low prices they charged, I expect tiny little things like you find at Lowes . Oh, no. See pics. And these are not generic water lilies either. Albert Greenberg, Bob Trickett, Charlene Strawn, Perry's Baby Red,etc. The packing was very good.
And I know my plants and what they should look like. What they sent me as Albert Greenberg is really Albert Greenberg, etc.
You gotta check this out. I am still kicking myself.

And the lotus tubers are HUGE. Blooming size, no doubt. What I would expect to pay for my Shiroman, Carolina Queen, and Sun Flower is easily 30-50$ instead of the pittance I did pay for them. Thank you Moodene for letting us know about this place!!!! Apparently if you live in their neck of the woods in Texas, you can go pick them up. I understand they have like 30 ponds or something like that. So, check them out and spread the word.

Help! you've got me drooling for those lotus tubers, but when I tried to go to the website, all I got was some narrative, but no listing of plants, prices, etc. What do you think I might be doing wrong? Should I try something else?

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

On the left hand side of that page , click on price list-bare root. It will take you to the pricelist. That is the wholesale price if you buy 10 of a particular lily. Retail is 1.5 times that (still ridiculously low). Tommy does not have pictures of each lily flower on the site, but you can google the names. I am still pinching myself. And the shipping was basically what it cost to send it with a buck or two extra for handling.

Thanks - will do -

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Excuse me. I stand corrected. Wholesale price for 5 of the same.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Rylaff & Moodene, thanks for this info!

The potted prices are also quite low. Which would you recommend for someone with limitted wg experience?
Dave

Saw Moodene's original post, and now I'm really hankering for a go at this site. Thanks you two! Like I really NEED another water lily! LOL

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Dave, you are in zone 6a , so you would probably be better off with a hardy lily. The next question is, how big is your pond? Both water lilies and lotus are easy to grow.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I'm about 600 gallons. I was wondering about the advantages of bare root vs potted because potted didn't seem that much more expensive.

That is very true. I do prefer to plant my own but they are both a great deal. I meant to tell you guys that one of my lotus, MRs. Perry D. Slocum (look that one up), has leaves erupting.

I had to bump this post back up--thanks for the info on texaswaterlilies!!! I ordered two lotus--already got them and they were huge--cheap shipping --great prices--they shipped them the day I ordered them and they are great people to do business with!!! I would gladly buy from them again--might have to order some water lilies now--Thanks for the info again!!! Cheryl

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I know. My lotus are already sending up pads. The waterlilies are planted and in the water. They are doing great too.

Stockdale, TX(Zone 9a)

I purchases from them and couldn't be more happy! Tommy is great, and so very helpful! The prices are amazing, the tubers were huge! Can't wait to see how these turn out, I will definitely buy more from them!

Well, it took me a total of 1 day to order more :) Can't beat the prices or the quality! Rylaff-you and your Florida weather are making me jealous! Can't wait for it to warm up here.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Ack! I waited too long and a lot of the lotus sold out. Woe is me!

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi Everyone,
I just wrote down all that I wanted to order of the hardy lilies, not thats not true!! I ordered what I could afford!! AND one lotus of course :) I grew some white lotus from seed last year and was so amazed how big the tubers were!! When I took them out of the container and saw they looked like huge white carrots!! I put them in the deep end of the pond and hope they will survive the winter. The deepest part of the natural pond is about 14' deep.
Thank You for the wonderful site :)
tootsie

I got hooked and placed my order, too. It's probably a good think some of the lotus had already sold out. I don't really have the room for more lilies, much less lotus, so I guess I better start building water garden pots!!!

Oh My goodness! I got my box today and can't believe the size and quality of the plants! I'm so excited! Thanks for letting us in on this wonderful resource.

Oh, and I forgot to say that one of the water lilies I ordered was already in bloom! It had two blooms open and several buds thanks to that fine Texas sunshine!

Roll up your sleeves and bring out the rubber boots everyone, they just added Papyrus, Cattails, and Arrowhead. I still can't get over the prices! The last day listed for ordering Lotus is April 1st so get 'em now before you can only buy them through the catalogs. You won't be sorry!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I know, I still cant get over the prices. Mine are growing like crazy. My lotus have leaves on the water surface and are now starting to put out the aerial leaves. Cant wait.

Here's a bad photo of a beautiful waterlily! This bloom was already happening when I received the water lily. Another one already has a bud on it! Ordered some arrowhead and papyrus today. I left my papyrus out during the winter and took a chance. I gambled, and I lost. That stuff is pricey up here for some reason.

How were the shipping charges?

Shipping charges are a bit steep if you don't place a large order. It might be a flat rate, I don't know. Ordered 5 each of the papyrus and arrowhead, plus a container of their water plant tabs. Total bill was 30$, 10 of which was shipping. But it's still the cheapest deal. I paid no sales tax since I don't live in Texas, and I know that the plants are going to be good. I think my shipping was about the same on the previous order I placed, and I ordered about 8 water lilies and a lotus. All really well packaged and labeled. It's worth it.

Thanks Pixydish. Now if I can just figure out which ones have the color I want. I'm trying to find a bright fuschia or dark pink. I'm learning that color photos of water lilies on the internet range all over the place for the same variety.

I'd say you'd do well to just email Tommy at the Texas Water Lilies. I'm sure he could advise you. He probably knows all of the water lilies really well.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm going to order some stuff from them since you guys are all so happy with it

This might be a good place for a co-op........
with the wholesale prices
and no,not me
but someone one organized can .....

bronson, IA(Zone 4a)

crestedchik--You wont be disappointed with there stuff--$9.00 for a lotus tuber is cheap!!! Its the biggest tuber I have got--I will never buy from anyone else but them---Yes I think it would be a good place for some one to do a coop from too--but how much cheaper can you get then $9 for a tuber!!!!

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

Well, I purchased 20 of the waterlily for $2.75 each, then called back and got 3 lotus for $5.00 each! 3 days later big box arrived!! Wonderful lilies and some in bloom already!! Tubers larger than my hand!! I had to put them in the closed tho, as we were stil very cold here, but now they are in the greenhouse and doing fine, maybe later today I will get them all out to the pond :) Very nice husband and wife team there at Texaswaterlilies!! Any questions you have, just call em, they are there not just to sell, but help you with your plants :) Check out the pond tablets!! They are huge!! #100 for $10.00 I just cut mine in 1/2.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I know, makes me want to dig another pond. I have the lotus in containers and they are starting to put up the aerial pads.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Yes...I know of another site that did a coop with them... but I was afraid to participate because shipping lotus once is risky enough without having to have them repacked and mailed again :)

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

rylaff, I'm so glad you mentioned keeping lotus in containers. I really want to get a lotus, but there's no room in the pond that we have now. How long can they stay in the container? And what do you do about mosquitoes? Do you have a pump in there? I had a water plant in a container for atleast a year without a pump, but it didn't get any sun at all, so algae was not a problem. We put gold fish in there to eat mosquitos.
Moodene, that is an awsome site. Isn't Waller north of Houston? It shouldn't be far from the RU in College Station. Are you going to that?

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have several pots going. I just throw mosquito dunk in there to keep the skeeters down. I keep them in the pots year round.

That's great news for me. I guess I can't get any now, but when they go on sale again, I'll be ready.:)
