Hi, roadrunner. I think the plant you photographed may be Salvia elegans http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1913/ rather than Salvia splendens. I don't think S. elegans has the open protruding "lip" as shown in your photo. Also, I'm not sure we can refer to either as a "wildflower" because the country of origin for both is Mexico from what I've seen online.
