Betting answer is yes. Never grew ginger but I've grown many other things from grocery store buys....potatoes, sweet potatoes, garlic, onion, etc.

yes, it will grow. Plant it just below the soil. Any deeper and it will rot.

Oh Marie,

I grew one out from the local Taiwanese store and it was beautiful! It had beautiful wavey leaves & all; but it got killed by Mr. Frosty. I'm trying again soon.

:-)

OK. Keep us posted! I've got a pot of galangal (ginger relative) that I bought as a little plant last year, and I really like it... It would be fun if your ginger grew!

I've planted sprouting ginger from the grocery store a couple of times. Best I ever got was a 12" plant last summer, and it died before I got moved. Of course, I was not paying much attention to my plants last summer, so it may have been my fault.

Your ginger should grow fine. If you were to unearth it, you will find green eyes starting to sprout. You probably won't know what kind it is till it blooms. A friend grew one that had small hidden yellow blooms. I didn't wait for blooms. Dug the roots to use. It made lots of roots but took lots of water once it started growing. Good luck. We'll be curious to know how it goes. Pod

I've got a question to add --------- just bought some ginger root with one of those green eyes and plan to plant it, but do I need to plant the entire thing or can I cut the chunk with the eye off and just plant it (like you'd do with potatoes or jerusalem artichokes)? Please let me know as I want to get it into a pot pretty soon.

I would plant the whole piece of ginger. If you choose to cut the eye, you better let it dry before you plant it. I suspect the ginger would rot otherwise. Maybe someone else has some experience with this.

I've got a couple of pieces of ginger root in the fridge. Can I plant this?

I would try it if it has eyes. Seems like that is what made me try it. Had one in the veggie drawer and when I took it out, it was sprouting. Good luck!

Thanks!
