I received a pot of lovely red tulips for Valentines and would like to save them to enjoy again. When they finished, I cut the spent blooms, placed in a sunny window and watered with weak MG and peroxide. They have proceded to turning yellow. Is it too late? What to do? I thought I would just let them recover in the pot and replant outdoors after some refrigeration next winter. I'm in zone 8b where tulips are not really happy.
need help salvaging potted tulips
Up North you could nurture them back to a bulb that will produce a flower again in a couple of years. Down South, I would not spend the time on it. They have used up much of their food, are out of their growing cycle and will not be big enough to produce a flower. The bulb you see is not the bulb that will grow next year....it is inside the "old" bulb. You can break one open and see what is in it.
I was at walmart 2 weeks ago and met several people who said they
finally quit digging up their tulips to freeze or refridgerate and they come back every year. The girl particularly mentioned a beautiful red one. I would try it. Can't do anything but waste a little time planting if they don't come back. I bought some tulips and hyacinths as they say they come back also.
Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
