weather

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Most everybody throughout the different forums has been commenting about their relatively mild winter. Last night at dinner party this man visiting from LA said something I hadn't thought it (and am going to try hard NOT to worry about): Hurricanes are more prevalent when the water is warm. Well, if our winter was mild, then the water will warm up easier and faster than usual next season so.....will we get more hurricanes?

Why did I listen to that man

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't like to think about it either, but I heard on the news several months ago that the National Weather Service (or whoever) predicts this year's hurricane season may be about as active as last year's. Argh!
Maybe if we ignore it, it won't happen?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

nothing that a good nursery shopping expedition won't erase from my mind, lol

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Amen!! We need to do something in your area of town. What is that place you and Kip were talking about? I can't remember the name, since it's the best kept secret, lol. Starts with a "C"?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

caldwells. I haven't been there in 2006, sort of waiting for stores to get more inventory. Today I went to Lowes and was surprised all they had was 3 gal. size of plants for $15 and above. Too rich for me! Maybe smaller sizes will come later. Tell me what your schedule is (Kipper's too) and we could go together, maybe do lunch too.

I agree, it's still too early for any of the nurseries to have much inventory. Maybe March sometime? Middle to late? Does Sunday or Sat work better for you? (I think Sunday is usually better for Kip.) Are they open on Sunday? Lunch, yes!
:-)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

i'll have to check, I think they are open on sundays during growing season. I will ck as we firm our plans. sat or sun fine w/ me, I guess will depend if they are open.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

It didn't take you two very long to change this subject! lol I think you discovered tho that worrying won't change anything. It never hurts to be prepared tho. I don't have anything to prepare for since I don't live around water, but I would like to be part of something that is prepared to help in time of need.

I wanted so bad to be involved and help after Katrina but there just wasn't anything I could do in my area. I called churches and the city offices, but all they needed was money, and all I had was time. I don't have as much time now, but would still like to somehow make a difference.

I just watched an Oprah show from last week where they gave the first houses built by Habitat for Humanity for some of the Katrina families. It was so good. Maybe I need to check into our local HFH and see if I can help plant instead of build.

Ok...back to your plans. :)

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Lol, you're right, it doesn't take long for us to get off topic. I'll tell you what, if we do get threatened with hurricanes this season, we'll head to your house for shelter! Whew! I feel much better now that the plans have been made, lol.

Hurricane Round Up at konkreteblond's place! Woo hoo!! Thanks for inviting us, Mary! LOLOL

I've heard that we are at the beginning of a 20 year cycle of nasty hurricane seasons, and the warmer than usual weather would definitely be a big part of that. Ugh. We need to start emptying our ice cube trays into the Gulf NOW!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

lol

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Lol, Hurricane RU sounds like a good idea!

Are you serious? A 20 year cycle of nasty hurricanes?! Hmmm... It may be time to move a little more inland.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

(looking at NOAA's webpage for confirmation...) Ooo.. 25 year cycle. Very eek. The good news is, we seem to be 7 or so years into the cycle already. This quote is from last August. They won't put out this year's hurricane forecasts until May. This whole page is full of really interesting information, if you want to check it out: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/hurricane.shtml

Quoting:
3. Multi-decadal fluctuations in Atlantic hurricane activity

Historically, Atlantic hurricane activity has exhibited very strong multi-decadal variability, with alternating periods lasting several decades of generally above-normal or below-normal activity. These multi-decadal fluctuations in hurricane activity result nearly entirely from differences in the number of hurricanes and major hurricanes forming from tropical storms first named in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean Sea.

Hurricane seasons during 1995-2004 have averaged 13.6 tropical storms, 7.8 hurricanes, 3.8 major hurricanes, and with an average ACE index of 159% of the median. NOAA classifies all but two of these ten seasons (El Niño years of 1997 and 2002) as above normal, and six of these years as hyperactive. If the 2005 season verifies as predicted, it will be the seventh hyperactive season in the last 11 years. In contrast, during the preceding 1970-1994 period, hurricane seasons averaged 9 tropical storms, 5 hurricanes, and 1.5 major hurricanes, with an average ACE index of only 75% of the median. NOAA classifies twelve (almost one-half) of these 25 seasons as being below normal, only three as being above normal (1980, 1988, 1988), and none as being hyperactive.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

On our local weather, the said it is a La Niña year and that means more hurricanes in the Gulf. They also said we would be below average rainfall(what rainfall, lol, we haven't had rain in months)

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Whoaaaa! I have space issues. LOL...my neighbor's are moving tho! Wanna buy a house? We need some good neighbors! I have no idea why they would want to trade Texas weather for W. Virginia!?

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

W Virginia?! (No offense to people who already live there, but...) What, are they nuts? I'd say, "String 'em up", but they have enough problems, lol!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

When it's 100 + degrees here this summer we'll be wishing we were there with them! At least I'll know someone now that I can go visit. :) I'm sad tho because she loves plants.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, she'll still be able to grow plenty of plants, just a whole different set than we grow here. Guess it will be somewhat of an adventure for her. She needs to join DG, so she can get some help up there.

You're right, it will be good to have someone to visit. That way you can visit when it's hot here but pleasant there, and you can even visit when they have snow, but then you get to go home without having to hassle with freezing pipes, icy roads, snow shoveling, cold cars, gardens covered in snow forever....

I have a friend who says she doesn't want a swimming pool, she wants a friend who has one. :-)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That's exactly how I feel about swimming pools! LOL

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Nery! When you are going to be up this way? I bet Northhavens is getting their inventory in now. :-)

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I think anyone that complains about the weather this week needs their heads analyzed! It has been beautiful...just wish I wouldn't been at work today--although me and a "buddy" considered coming down with a viralent (sp?) strain of something and going, how does that country song so elaquently put it?, oh yeah---go "picking wildflowers".....lol

Meadows Place, TX(Zone 9a)

Boy maggiemoo and vossner. If I didn't snoop around this forum I wouldn't know how many times that my name was dropped. No wonder my ears have been warm lately. ;o)

Kay Dee's place, Caldwells is open Sundays 12:00 till 5:00 after the offical spring.

Yes, Sundays are best for me since most others work on Monday (my other day off).

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

And official Spring is.... (March 20th?)

Yes, Kip, we pretty much depend on you to snoop around in here. :-)

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

93 degrees here in Goldthwaite today. Not natural, but what has been for a while now. A week ago Saturday it was 19 degrees. Fortunately a bit of rain fell last week, but not nearly enough to make a dent in the drought. We have the AC on tonight after burning all the firewood last week! :>))

Patricia

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh my word! Talk about a turn around!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

My friend/neighbor is actually moving to Virginia Beach, which takes us back to the original topic of hurricanes! I'm thinking there's not much of Texas that she is going to miss. She didn't see much of it tho, just our area that is the prairie with no trees. That makes the 93 degrees we had yesterday quite warm to someone from a cooler climate. I would love to live near the water, except maybe not this year.

You are right about the plants. They went to Vermont in Aug. and she took a few pics of some plants for me. They were nice and green, lacking that faded green and burnt tips like some of mine. But hey, we Texans are up to the challenge, right!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes we are, and we have beautiful gardens no matter what the weather.
We just have to be better at it than people from other states,
but we love the challenge right?

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Hear, hear!

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Don't know where I heard it, but the forecast is for this year's hurricane season to be very similar to 2005 :-(
