OK..we are becoming experts in taking care of the gessies....we know the signs of disease etc...BUT are we as diligent with our own health/bods?...........what are we eating.....are we exercising......tell us about your story
Are we taking as good care of our health as we do our AVS
I am in bed most of the time. I can't eat much so I have to drink boost and rake Morphine. lol I don't really like boost it has to be cold but it keeps me healthy and my blood work perfect. I do also have a Breezy Boost juice drink which is refreshing and taste better.
Before all this I was a health addict, exercise, worked out, ate all organic, thin , ran circles around others , never sick , my whole life even as a child took the best vitiamins and herbs... I never drank or smoked either. It's weird but the healthiest people get sick, look at Lou Gehrig !
I will start then. since moving here I have been suffering from a horrible allergy. nothing makes it better. i have tried every medicine over the counter and prescription. It is so bad it keeps me awake at night. most of these meds have some type of doping agent in them so I spend my days feeling like a zombie/sleep walker. :o(
I used to do ulttrarunning until September. Now I am too tired/ doppy to do anything. :o((
How about you peeps???
Hello Violet! We posted at the same time!
Violet, forgive me if I am too nosey but what is wrong with you?
I've always been a healthy gal. Always ate right, whole foods, organic granola girl kind of person. Made all my kids food from scratch when they were babies, never a jar of baby food. Don't smoke Do enjoy the wine of our Napa Valley but in moderation.
It was after DH was diagnosed with Leukemia that we went all out and kind of went a little overboard on vitamins and health food. Our pendulum as swung back to middle now and we eat all organic, nothing boxed or processes, and follow the diet/lifestyle similar to that laid out in the 'whole foods bible'
Ive been a vegetarian (who sneaks crab and fish once once in a while) for about 10 or more years. But even before that, I didn't eat red meat or pork.
So I consider my self very healthy. I don't take what doctors tell me at face value, and push when I think a test is needed. I watch DH go undiagnosed for his leukemia and skin cancer and finally told the doctor what I wanted done, not the other way around. I guess I'm trying to say I'm very pro-active where my family's health is concerned.
Spider, have your house checked for molds/mildews. They can cause major problems. I suffer from allergies too. I take Zirtec for it, but have to take half a tab because I'm thin and my body doesn't metabolize it well. If I take a whole one, Nighty night! I also take it at night so if it makes me sleepy, oh well, I'm already asleep.
I'm so allergic to all my animals that if I dont wash right after I pet them and love them up, I break out in hives. But it doesn't stop this animal lover from having 4 dogs and a plethora of cats!
When I ride my horse, same thing, long sleeves and gloves or I'm a swollen eye, sneezing, hived out thing!
I tried claritin for a long time and then it stopped working for me, but I use it now and then - it's MUCH cheaper than the $50 for my zirtec. Doesn't make me grogged out either.
Laurie you are amazing !
I was always heathly too.Watched what I ate,lots of fruits and veggies,exercised.
Then 4 years ago I got very sick, rushed to the hospital and the doctors told me I had conjestive heart failure(at 44 years old.)and might need a heart transplant.Yikes !!It scared me to death almost.lol.
Today thanks to the medicine my heart is strong enough that I don;t need the sugery.I'm disabled but living with it.The doctors told my to sit and do nothing to make my heart stronger. Not this kid.LOL.I do things I shouldn't but I'm to young to sit and do nothing.I have to keep going. And get the heart stonger.
No matter that I took got care of myself in my earlier years I still got sick
all you guys are amazing....here's my story...i am very proactive about my health now...have been blessed i guess with good genes...but i do have hypertension..so on meds for that...but that's it for pills...i own a vitamix...www.vitamix.com.....it's an amazing machine...been around a long time...bit expensive but worth it...about $400....it runs at about 32000 rpm a minute and instantly liquifys everything....so i put fruits...flax seed...pistacios...etc...in and make my vita drink...i make about a gallon at a time....typical drink consist of ...
apples..bananas...mangoes,frozen strawberries, wild blueberries, pistacios, starfruit (when in season)..citrus..soy protein,,papaya..(most with skins on).. this mix becomes a paste like substance which i dilute with water as i use it...i usually freeze 4 quarts of the paste and it last about a week...
...i do go to the gym just about every day....and sometimes i overdo it...the other day i was lifting weights and i somehow strained the back...but hey, that's expected from a 71yo teenager...
one other secret...as laurie pointed out...is to stay away from as much processed food as possible....and if you can..grow your own...thank goodness red meat is so expensive..i can't afford it...lol
...I do take vitamin supplements as well and certainly omega 3 and coq10..important.
....Anna ..on the allergies...i have lots of sinus probs here...nothing seems to help it but the Halls eucalyptis cough drops...for some reason that helps me...as sometimes the innerear acts up....
...Allison...you are amazing...I certainly hope you know how much you inspire all of us....boost is a very good nutritional support...glad you're doing well with it...
...always need helpful hints from others..so don't be shy..
....
jan...you have the right attitude....there are many exercises that one can do in a chair even.....one of the things that i should do...and don't.....is deep breathing...there are deep breathing programs that one can do in a chair than have the same "cardio" effect of a workout...typical ones....breathing in deeply...than blowing the air out till you can't do it any more...amazing how 10 minutes of this a day helps..
My Doctor says try doing this once a day if able'
workout...typical ones....breathing in deeply...than blowing the air out till you can't do it any more...amazing how 10 minutes of this a day helps"
The Neurological disease I have makes muscles too weak to breath. And CQ builds up " Not fun" " Not Good" With some Neurological disease exercise is bad as when you over do the muscles they weaken faster and die and you can't get them back.
So even exercise in bed or wheel chair is impossible for me.
I use to go to therapy I loved it. Even when I first got a cane they put me on a stationary bike and I could not do it :((
See Motor Neurons nourish your muscles and tissues .You have more Motor Neurons than any other " Good Thing " and they have no stress protectors. And with people with ALS for some reason we have too much glutamate that blocks the motor Neurons from nourishing the tissues and muscles so they become weak and die and you can't move.
You diaphragm also gets weak so you can't breath. The more you lose these muscles and over do them the faster they die and you can't get them back.
So if I can take one deep breath a day I am Blessed :))
Jan " No matter that I took got care of myself in my earlier years I still got sick " me too. You just never know. Your so young.
I am almost only 48 but got ALS when I was a young healthy never sick 42 .
Each day is a Blessing !
allison...we are the ones Blessed by you....thank you for your inspiration..
