Walmart's Mystery plant - ID please?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

At some point I will be able to show some restraint and NOT hit every garden section of every store I visit EACH time...until then...I bring home mystery plants. My first plant-related love is fragrance...second would be coloring/pattern. I'm sure one of you will be able to ID this plant - I mean seriously if Wally World has it...it can't be too rare..LOL..and for only a $1.74 I wasn't about to leave the little jewel.
The tops of the leaves have a pearl-like sheen to them. The underside looks like human veins ...the stems are a muted red and "fuzzy" I saw them from a distance...very impressive patterns...then when I picked it up and the light caught the tops...WOW, loved the pearl-like "finish." Anyone have a clue what they are? I'm guessing filtered light - kept evenly moist. If you know what this is and how to care for it...please share.
Many thanks,
Chantell

I'm almost positive it's a begonia, but I'm clueless as to exactly what kind. Hope that helps a little bit. :o)

Chantell,

I to seen one of those at our Wally World but mine was in worse shape..it looked like someone knocked it over an just shoved it back in the container...It was so thristy and really looking bad..So i put it in my buggy and when i finally found hubby over at the electronics dept. he seen in it the there and just rolled his eyes..I said i was walking by and it just jump in....and i did not have the heart to take it out. But now it is doing so much better even has a new leaf coming...and to think for a $1.74 i saved that little plants life.

Char,
Yeah...you start feeling bad for them...beginning to think I need the 10 step program for plant addicts!! I liked it so much I went back and picked up a couple more tonight. This was a new shipment - no one really "discovered" yet...so these still looked good. Wondering how big they get ???? Ours were $1.97 - so how'd ya'll get em' cheaper down there? ;)

I am sitting here telling myself I WILL NOT go to Walmart today!! Pretty little begonia. No telling which one, but you might post on the Begonia forum and see if anyone knows. So many of them are similar. They are one of my addictions - looks like you are well on the way, too :-)

I want some rex begonias and Char, I can't believe you found one at Walmart for that price! I don't care WHAT shape it was in, as long as it had an ounce of life left to it, I would have bought it and checked behind the shelf to see if there were any more that had fallen down there!

Oooooh! I just love them. I've been drooling over the ones that Logee's has. I really like 'Tiny Bright' and 'Escargot.'

It's great to hear that someone else has plants sneaking into their shopping carts. I hear them whispering, "psst, take me home!" And it always comes from the saddest orphans. Don't you just love those rescue missions? Once home, they heave a great bit sigh of relief and turn into Cinderellas.
If you grow African Violets, the begiona (I'm sure it is, just don't know the cultivar) will respond to the same kind of care. Water from the bottom and let them soak up whatever they need. Slightly damp. Mine thrive in a bay window that gets filtered morning light.
Any help?

PS. Found five different ones at Lowe's a few months ago. All looking happy as can be now, and one leaf, sacrificed to propagation was pinned out flat on a container of perlite (kept damp), then I used a razor blade to slice across a couple veins, and it now has little baby begonias starting at the cuts! There's a wonderful book on the subject by Ken Druse that explains how plants, when damaged (as in having a razor blade taken to them) will do their best to repair the damage or continue the species by sprouting, growing new leaves, or by sending out roots.
It's called vegetative reproduction but all that fancy word means is sticking a leaf into a glass of water on the windowsill and waiting. What amazing things happen!

I want to try that with my streptocarpella!

Hello again all! My walmart still has the type that I posted in that first photo - so don't give up. Went to HD tonight and found 4-5 different types..of course they were $2.97 instead of the $1.97 I paid for the first one. Tootsie...what you described sounds so cool...makes me want to get a leaf and try it. :)
Here's the Walmart and HD treasure together! Coloring is not great...I so need to get a decent digital camera and quit borrowing my daughters. LOL

Hey, I found a few begonias at one of the WM's near us a few months back, too.....there were very few begonias 'tucked into' the tray with all the other 'same old, same old' plants, though.....so look carefully!

My sister was looking for begonias at that time, so I bought them for her.

I'm going this weekend....I'll check it out.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Here's a daylight pic...coloring a tad better. And you're absolutely right, Nan...you have to go "in search of." I found such great stuff there last night. One succulent that I'd wanted for a bit...way in the back. the ONLY one...and boy was he pot bound...yeah, bigger plant for el cheao price gotta love that!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Hmm....*maybe* I'll find one tomorrow?!

I won a little money in a raffle the other day (didn't even buy a ticket...someone else bought it for me, I guess!) so I'm in for a little reward!!

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Wow you hit it lucky..You will find out you have a new addiction, there is such a variety out there and no two leaves look the same..I'm still having a hard time with some of mine not liken the care I'm giving them...:o(((

Loretta...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

How ghetto am I? I just water them when they start drooping and put them in a filtered light area. LOL

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

lol! Whatever works, works!

I went to WM last weekend...not a begonia in sight.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

When mine start drooping the leaves fall off..Do you add anything to your water??

Loretta...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Just "slightly" drooping not hung over...LOL. Everyone seems to like Super Thrive (sold at Walmart etc.) - I just use that every now and then i.e. when I think about. Aren't I just so helpful? Not!! LOL
