Welcome jacqui_ontario, to Dave's Garden and the Canadian Gardening Discussion forum! I tried to send this out to you last night, but couldn't post or send dmail for some strange reason, so I couldn't even report the problem. Anyway, a big warm welcome to you now. Come on over and tell us about yourself.

Welcome Jacqui You will enjoy your time here!!

(Zone 5b)

Thank you Ginny and Dawna ...for welcoming me on this forum..and ViolaAnn for sending me an email as well (Ann...I replied to your email, but not sure it travelled through the system..I gather some didn't yesterday)
For the past 2 years I've occaisonally checked the Plant Database here for info and photos - what a great resource.
My garden is long and narrow with an ascending hill at the back near the property line, quite close to Lake Ontario/St. Lawrence River (late start to spring blooming times and very late severe frost), and I began this garden 32 years ago. The garden is a combo of mostly perennials, a few annuals and containers.
I'll try to upload a photo of the garden - I've read its fairly easy on DG.
It's a snowy day here.

Hi Jaqui..welcome to the boards!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Lovely planting, welcome to the forum!

I live in Ottawa and have a cottage on the Big Rideau, about halfway to Kingston. This shot shows some of the land I have to work with. (I have a brother who insists on the lawn... not my choice!)

Hi Jacqui,

Got your D-mail, but haven't had time to reply to it. Play in both Ottawa Symphony and Ottawa Chamber Orchestra and BOTH have concerts this weekend. Just in from OCO concert. Had OSO rehearsal all afternoon. I'll probably not get around to answering properly until after OSO concert Monday evening as I have three more rehearsals before the concert and the handbells that I direct play in church tomorrow morning as well.

TTYL.

Jacqui - What a lovely bunch of columbines you have there in that colourful garden! I love hostas and heucheras for the shade and daylilies and peonies for the sun. How about you - what kinds of perennials do you grow? Do you have a few favs?

I'm not too far away from Kingston, I live just west of Ottawa. ViolaAnn and I signed up on Daves Garden around the same time and we are near enough that we were able to do a hosta trade last season and visit each other's gardens. Welcome to Daves Garden, you'll meet lots of nice people here and I'm sure you'll have fun in all the forums!

Hi Jacqui and welcome to Dave's. You have a lovely garden, and I look forward to seeing more of it come the nicer weather. If you want to find out what hardiness zone you are in, please click on this link - its to the Canadian plant hardiness zones.

(Zone 5b)

Thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome. Christine, my zone is 5b - should I add it to my members page? I notice it appears below all of your user names. Drivenbonkers, our oldest son was in Perth for 2 years taking a course in Historical Restoration - is your garden in Perth or on the outskirts? Andycdn, great cottage and lot. Every year I either increase the beds or edge "alittle" more than necessary. Do you have a pump to draw water from the river to water the garden?
Sandy I've driven through White Lake - my husband and I have canoe tripped in the eastern section of Algonquin Park. I remember the Canadian Shield forests are quite magnificent near White Lake. Ann, looking forward to your email when you have time.

I love most perennials and many annuals but shy away from bright yellow and orange flowers! Having said that, here's a photo of a bright yellow I do enjoy..Stylophorum dephyllum (Wood poppy) that is beginning to seed itself in a shady bed. I brought it back from nursery on Salt Spring Island, BC. I always feel a "connectedness" across this great land of ours when I look at it.

Very pretty wood poppy Jacqui, even if it is yellow...lol. I share your "non-love" of yellow, but I agree, some shades of yellow are very nice, and can add some balance to the garden beds.

Yes, go to "My Info" at the top of the page, click on preferences, and then "your location"; near the bottom is where you'll be able to enter your hardiness zone.

Perth,, ON(Zone 5a)

good afternoon jacqui! I'm just a bit west of Perth, south of Hwy #7. Close enough to town, but still far enough out!

I take it your son attended Algonquin College?, our oldest is in Ottawa, at Algonquin......

I am so looking forward to this year's gardening season! Love your yellow poppy!
