here we go...in 2 separate locations in n.e. Tananzia..AV's were discovered and collected by a German colonial offical and planter..Baron von Saint Paul...in 1892...we're not sure whether he sent plants or seeds to his father in northern Germany, but in either case plants flowered there in 1893 for the first time outside native Africa...Upon seeing these the Royal Botanic Garden at Herrenhausen realized they were a new plant find..and named the plants SAINTPUALIA in honor of the father and son who grew theses plants...this period was still before 1900...later they discovered that the Baron had sent 2 species to his father..the rounded capsules are now recognized as SAINTPAULIA IONANTHA..while the long "fruited" species" was designated as S. CONFUSA ...these made little impact until in 1927...a famous American nursery acquired seeds and produced 1000 plants from these seeds..and launched our LUNACY of today. Iincluding BLUE BOY NEPTUNE and others..
..FOR THE AV LEAVES....the question is;...WHAT IS THE NAME OF THAT NURSERY?
win some A.V. leaves......be first to answer this question

Here is where I got it..

Joanne
Well, I have this strange disease. AVitis. Can't stop reading about them. : ) I am not kidding; I have really been reading about AVs. I am notoriously bad with plants, but I just decided to go for it, anyway. So, I thought the better prepared the more likely the plants would live. : ) I have read on the web, and checked out every AV library book they have. : ) I have really been doing pretty good with 'em, too. YEA!!!
Congratulations Had!! :-)
That was fun ... so what's the next contest? LOL
Sharon
hi sharon...maybe we can get some others to join in with some contest...it's fun and can be very informative
hi Joane sorry you weren't the first one with answer...but good for you...thanks for joining in...
had that's great remember to send me your address via d mail...
Pam Congratulations :))
Bob has nice leaves ! Congratulations Pam Yippi !
joane that is a great site...i hope members will look it up...although i lived in L.A. for 28 years...i didn't get to the 'HUNTINGTON" much...it's a great place
allison...so Had is Pam...now i know...congrats Pam..!!
Thanks, Bob. : ) That was reallly fun. We need to remember that. Allison, you would be good at that next time you need to give away some leaves. (Are you still putting down leaves every day?)
This is a cool bunch. I wonder why the vast majority seems to be in Florida? Coincidence? Do you think violets fare better there because of the humidity?
Hi Bob,
This was fun and I am just happy for Pam.
Joanne
Cool! Glad to know that Had is really Pam, because Pam is my sister's name!!
Sharon
Leaves oh my goodness Lorry sent me about a hundred, I had several I bought, Bob sent me some, I put leaves down from all my plants, Laurie sent me tons laurie and Bob and Lorry we've been trading !
They will be baby plants by fall I hope !
pam I now have given at least 300 plants, and hundred of leaves lost track for shipping to DG's friends sense Middle of Nov, 2005 AND I now have 8 people that have paid shipping money for FREE plants.. and more people sending funds .. And a box of leaves going to South Africa. I don't really have many leaves as I grow by leaf ! And I enjoy doing so. It's with help about the only thing I do anymore. But living in a single wide one bedroom trailer no room so I share my babies and enjoy this ! But I'm trying to cut down. Too much for me to care for and no light room for the few plants I'd enjoy keeping myself. And I just don't have the engery.
And with my disability and being awake a total of 4-5
hours in a 24 hour day..I am in bed talking to you all
and labling cups, I have tons of babies need tranplanted and watered... and i'm exhausted.
Don't think i'll be sending any freebies gift out until these are all shipped. I pack one box wrap plants from bed , take 3, 4 hours thats all i can do for the day.
Sorry Pam and others someone else will have to donate the leaves ! you don't need a lot to share and run a contest ! laurie ran a great one with some snippers :))
Sharon, check your dmail. : )
Allison, sounds like you have your hands full. : ) You are really generous. Are you still taking pictures?
Oh yes I been posting pictures a couple times a week when I have new blooms :))
I just posted a bunch the other day :))
Yesterday I think . They also showed some of the plants I had up for adotption.

You can take leaves from all your plants to put down that's what I do to get more :))
The leaves you sent are doing great. It is the leaves from my stepmom I think are not gonna make it. It was cold when she sent them and the mailman put the box on my front porch. (usually the mail is in a box down the street). I am just starting to get the plants you sent under the grow lights. YEA!!! My favorite is still the Milky way, I think. I have not had the courage to try to root the sprout thing on the Albosia Cygnet. Gotta work up the courage. HA HA........ How's Precious? Here is Sweetie, the spoiled rotten member of our household. : )
oh my...you guys are so busy..and allison...i swear i should learn from you and be more disciplined with things...i have plenty of leaves now also...this weekend..i'm really putting them down....
AHHH Pam so cute :)) Precious is in her Dad's arm her head on the pillow and as close to him as she can in bed :))
I'm happy the leaves are doing good. Lot's of people have been getting cold/froaen leaves.
Bob that Lorry sent me like a hundred leaves. lol I'm still labeling
Sweetie certainly is just that! What a cutie! She looks entirely contented in that photo and quite pleased with herself.
Pam, I think Allison mentioned once that you can root that Alsobia stolon without detaching it from the mother plant.... just stick it into the same pot or into a little pot nearby, and cut the connecting stem only after the stolon baby has good roots.
pam...florida is NOT the best place for AV/s...humidity always very high if not 100 percent....maybe more reitred people in fla and they had grown them before coming here etc...when summer comes...i am SELDOM>.in the house...
Yes African violets are happy with 40-50 percent humidity just perfect. If you wick you have humidity. Small glass of water by plants humidity , Moist pebbles
under plant pots give humidity. Also best to buy plants small they adjust to what ever humisidty you have.
Don't be afrain of Alsobia stolon or Epsica stolon. They root within days like weeds. I cut mine off at very end cloest to plant. I take a small pot or solo cup. Make sure hole in bottom. Wick or don't wick. Fill with light soil-less mixture. Take stolon if peice on each end I keep it this way. Cut them short enough so when you put them into soil you can push stolon right to touch soil. I fold each stem piece on each end gently down together push them into soil with stolon in middle of the pot/cup. If only one side ok too same thing just push stem into middle of cup/pot until stolon touch soil. Water threw good. Drain. Place under lights or window. Alsobia like to be more moist and like food. It will root with-in a week and be growing wild !
Ok, I'm gonna go for it. : )
Hi Allison,
I am so sorry for you....I had no idea that you had a disability, one would never know it by how many plants and leaves you have...my goodness! You might even be worse than me when it comes to violets!
I would like to know, no rush, when you feel up to it. How you start them and what you start them in and how you label them.
No rush remember.
Thank you so much for your expertise...I sure do appreciate it.
Joanne
