Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Did you know Kenton has GREEN arms and thumbs :))
Take a look at some of his plants that were tiny babies in 2 inch pots in December 2005
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/578220/
WOW can he grow. And he has a lot of babies growing ! Maybe he'll up-date us with new baby pictures soon. I know he's going to have a Zillion Blue Dragon babies !

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

they are beautiful!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

yep...amazing...terrific...

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

That's what I say too Bob ! amazing...terrific

Abilene, TX

Those are great. I like the grid (or whatever you call it) they are on, too. Cool!!

Lilburn, GA

Well done Kenton! It is beautiful!

Denver, CO

The grid is paneling for offices' lights, pretty cheap at Home Depot and easy to cut.

And how can I say no to Allison (as though it is difficult not to photograph plants!)?

Denver, CO

Ok, to testify for Allison's babie's vigour, here is my current favorite 'Fantasy Radiance' with a newly harvested leaf in the pot that contained the plant in early December! This one is such a happy weed! I am amazed at the size of new leaves, and love their texture.

A leaf of 'Blue Dragon' that Allison spoke of. Although small, there are ten individual babies on this one.

I can't help but post this popper. I just got it today; 'Rob's Boondoggle.'

And 'Rob's Fefi.' And yes, they are both in quarantine/isolation, being enjoyed on teh kitcehn table for a while. How long do you reckon' they should sit there in health?

Are you still running lights at night for heat, Allison? And how is Keyring, I have not seen her for a little while? And where's NannaNavarro? I have been too busy in school and spring ground preparations to check in often enough about this growing forum.

And just for the fun of it, here is a new gold Crocus (very small, near the base) planted below a palm tree!

The plants are beautiful! I am also interested in the "grid". Do you wick your plants using the grid as a "lid" over a large well?

Kenton I'm so Jeolous your Orchid trail came from same plant as mine I took a leaf off of yours to get my babies and yours wow sproted to Fantasy .
Orchid Trail (H. Pittman) Double orchid. Dark green. Semiminiature trailer
I love my Orchid trail bloom but yours is wild !

I can't believe how much 'Fantasy Radiance' has grown. Yes it was small baby in that little pot you have one of her leaves in ! Grow me one please :)) Fastest growing in what around 2 months !
Royal wasp and Blue Dragon babies coming along super too ! You watch now those babies will grow so fast. In another 3-4 weks the babies will all be taller and larger than Mom. Then sometimes I separate them . If some of the babies are too small I will either keep them with Mom and repot in new soil, or keep some of the smaller babies together in a new pot/soil until they grow larger. And if Blue Dragon's leaf is still good you can use it again ! WOW :))
You sure can grow them Kenton. Are they still wicked into the fish tank ? I think they love it. I know when I give me plants or babies a fish drink they grow crazy.
I am still putting my lights on at night and guess what I started putting them on at night last summer being so hot so the A/C did not have to work so hard, then winter came we did it to keep them warm . But last winter nothing grew that terrific to write home about . This winter babies grew crazy and plants blooming away ! So I guess it's lights at night year round !
I have 'Rob's Boondoggle. I bought it from Violet Gallery last Sept/Oct ( cant remeber when but it was way after Jill/Nanna went there) It must have been October as I was waiting on shipment when I joined DG 's ! It came blooming and never stopped. It's like a sllk plant. I have ots of babies growing of it and gave lots of leaves away. Violet Gallery sends large plants !
Kenton your growing amazes me ! How many people got leaves the same time as Kento from me have babies like this :)) And plants growing like Kentons double and tripling in size.
Your number one GREEN arms in my book Kenton !

WOW, fabulous photos, Kenton -- great growing!! Your new little 'Rob's Fefi' is stunning. Yup, your thumbs are definitely green all the way up to your shoulders!

Isolation is one of those questions... hard to do for the recommended 4 to 6 months when your space is limited, and sometimes you end up taking a chance. I think there's at least one pest mentioned in a recent AVSA article that can travel down to lower shelves but not up to higher shelves, so I may try isolating new plants for as long as possible in a room of their own, then putting them under the lights on the lowest shelf of my stand. I'll dip in Neem and repot with added diatomaceous earth and maybe a little systemic insecticide before putting new AVs in the same room as my established ones, I think. I'm worrying more about this since my collection is larger now & since I have so many little babies that I'd like to send out in good health this spring!

Denver, CO

Good to see you, Nanna. I do wick them through the grid into a freshwater fish tank. I need o change the water, as it is becoming high in minerals and salts, before I continue to use wicks. (I've been above watering for a few weeks). It seems to make blooming-size plants very happy, but babies hate the area.

It is somewhat ironic that I am isolating these more for their own good- as many of my others have waning powdery mildew. But, as I understand, it is spore-carried and they will get it if they get it, being in the same house. But, temperatures are warming up and the mildew is slowly disappearing.

Speaking of wicks, the new plants I have were installed with nylon hose strips. Has anyone tried or tested these? (I know the lady that grew them) There are roots following the wick down and filling up the basin! She uses fancy little containers as basins for each of her plants.

Haven't used nylon strips. I use acrylic knitting yarn. If you use 4 ply you can divide the yarn. I use 4 ply in 6 inch pots, 3 strands in 4 inch pots 2 strands in 2 inch pots and 1 strand in the micro mini or 1 inch pots. I've been using it for two years and it's doing great. Each time I repot I use new yarn. I repot about every 6 months.

I've read that when the roots grow out the bottom into the wicking agent that it's time to repot. Don't know though. That has never happened to me.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I have some plants the roots are coming out the bottome of the pot. lol I need to get a 5 or 6 inch pot for it. I also have one growing in a 2 inch put in it when a baby and it had roots wrapping around the wicks . lol Talk about a root system it had to go from the 2 inch pot to 4 and has been growing crazy eer sense.
I do know a lot of people even Males use nylons for wicks. Some get them from their sisters and Mom.
Me I pretty much live in PJ's no need for nylons and more so I use yarn or mason string I think it is called.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Ok Kenton I think your plants love the fish tank look how fast they have grown. Sorry about the mix -up with your Orchid Trail really being
Allegro Appalachian Trail (J. Stromborg) Single lavender pansy/red-violet eye, purple fantasy. Light green, pointed, quilted, serrated. Standard trailer
Your fantasy bloom is stunning Along with all your other plants .
