How long before you see ears?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I am getting rather discouraged with my leaves. The little AVs that Lorry sent me are doing so well. I will take some photos of them tomorrow. I already took some but they are growing so much that I want to show you all the latest update. But my leaves have not done anything but just sit in the soil. I did everything that you all told me to do. I put them in the soil on Jan 28. Shouldn't I be seeing some ears by now? I don't know what to do for them. I have kept them watered. I keep them under the lights. They look fine but just aren't producing. Lorry did a fantastic job of packing them. They arrived all safe and sound. So what could my problem be? I was hoping to have received my sample of VF-11 by now, hoping that would help but it has not come yet. I have been wondering if I should use some Superthrive on them. I do not want to lose them. Am I jumping the gun and expecting them too soon, or should they have produced some babies by now? Any suggestions?

Oh sweetie, it's much too soon. :) I believe it's a minimum of 6 weeks. Just be patient. If the leaves aren't dying, then you're still okay.

You're welcome. :)

JesseK,
I'll let you in on a secret - as long as you go and stare at them every ten minutes, they won't pop up an ear; you have to get busy with something else, forget to check them for 2 days, go look, and they will all be up!

Am I right, guys?

so right 2zeus! Lots of factors can determine how fast the ears will pop up, genetics/variety, how long was the petiole and how deep into the soil, warmth of the envioronment, how old the leaf was.

Some of mine have been down since december with no ears, others got ears after 4 or 5 weeks. Since the ears develop at the base of the petiole (leaf stem) if your petiols were long and deep into the soil, the ears have a ways to travel before the reach the surface of the soil.

Yup your all right ! One could even take a year. If the leaf is healthy I keep it ! Sometimes if it's been long time months I like to transplant it and less deep in soil. Sometimes while doing this I'll find little babies growing !

unfortunately - patience is key here....

I put leaves down on November 11, and on December 26 I had a few ears popping up. All my Trailers put out ears first...then the others followed. On December 17 I received a heat mat I had ordered and placed my containers on it...thinking that might help the process along.

Overall I lost quite a few leaves...but am very happy with what I am still waiting for my plantlets to get a little bigger so I can pot them up separately.

I have one a put down like 6 months ago at least and it is just now showing an ear. Patience is the name of the game.

UGHHH I am short on patience, have many healthy leaves, no ears as of yet! I stare at them everyday and my grandson keeps asking if my "babies" are doing ok! I will try to be patient, but I swear these AV leaves are giving me a complex.

April, at least you're not as neurotic as me, I lift them every day out of the perlite to see if there is any changes.
so happy to see you posting again, I missed you!

Hi JesseK,

I have been waiting for two leaves since January 6.....if nothing else we do develop patience waiting for our little ears to pop up...but oh the excitement when we see them!

These last couple I put up I used rooting powder and I read on the web it slows them down so I won't be doing that again.

Hi Jan,

Wow! Six months...why so long I wonder...was it planted too deep or is that just the way that particular one is?
