Found this in the dirt cellar of our old Victorian home. With pine shavings and chopped straw, it'll make the perfect nesting box. Can you guess at its past life?

Yep! I'm so proud. Now I really have to plant my "Outhouse Hollyhocks" by the coop. They say people used to not have to ask where the privy was; you just looked for the hollyhocks. :)

Absolutely priceless! I do recognize the holes. LOL My great grandma refused indoor plumbing until she left her home. You say hollyhocks are the outhouse plant of choice?? I thought it was canna?

I'd been using cardboard boxes with holes cut in them for nesting boxes, as the hens seem to appreciate the closed-in nature of a dark box with a hole. So it was a gimmee when I saw these. I like coops with old ladders, cabinets, etc.; this was just an extension of that. Now I have to cut a crescent moon into the coop door. :)
yes, that moon will be the finishing touch!
Zeppy, did you get the new nesting boxes installed ? Chickens are so funny when you put something new in their pen. I love to watch them stand and cock their heads and gawk at anything strange in their little world.

Those nesting boxes are really one box, after the Storey "dark box" idea (though not all that dark). We'll see if they take to it. Here's the little door outside we collect the eggs from.

Hey Zeppie, those look great. Are your chickens taking a liking to them yet ? I like your little egg collection door. That makes it easier than having to go inside the pen each time.

Funny, I hadn't noticed before that one of the holes was small and the other larger. Guess when Mama went to the outhouse, she dragged the little ones in tow. Our kids don't know what they've got with all those cute little potty-chairs, do they ? hehe
I guess you didn't want the kids to fall in too often. Ick...
The hens aren't moved in yet until we get those roosts up. Soon, soon, soon, I hope.
Does your egg door have a latch ? I didn't have a latch on mine, and I think that's how the raccoon got in and got some of my chickens a while back. Who would have thought something would get up that high and be able to manipulate the door open while hanging on the side of the building ? That was the time I lost chickens and could find no visable way of entry into their pen. It had to be thru the egg door. It still bumfuzzles me how he did it, but that's what had to happen. Since then, I've got latches on all of mine, no more problems with that...........................so far. :-)
Hmm. Didn't think of that. We are planning to put a latch on it, as it doesn't *quite* close. I'll get right on it; thanks! We don't have any raccoons, fortunately: I'm in a small agricultural village and I think they don't make it in this far. :)
