Novice gardener here with a blank canvas for me to landscape (aren't those new cookie cutter homes sad....trying to spruce up mine) so I could use ideas from other 8b-er's about what works for them. I went nuts and stayed up all night to compile a binder of catalog pics for sunny and shade garden ideas. I think I've narrowed it down to what I'd like to try. But I sure messed up one bed already buying mums. Decided I really do not like the look of mums.....
Greetings from TEXAS, zone 8b...
hello and welcome from upstate new york. you will love this place.
Thank-you herbie43.
Hi, I live to the west of you. Drop by the Texas forum and we'll try to help. Yes, seems like mums are nice when they're blooming here, but otherwise...not so nice. In this la nina drought, we have to be careful what we're growing anyway.
I'm slow in starting any seeds this year, gotta get busy if I'm going to grow anything that way.
~~~~~~~Waving hello and welcome to Dave's Garden from Houston. I hope you see you in the other forums.
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Patti and Linda! I love this place. =)
Hi there and welcome to DG :)
In a way, having a blank canvas can be a great thing. You don't have to tear out anything you don't like first. A lot of the things we grow here in S. Louisiana are grown in San Antonio also. You can get some great advice by visiting your local nurseries and even your county extension agent. I know one thing that was helpful to us when we had a blank slate years ago was to drive through some of the neighborhoods that were professionally landscaped and just take notes so that we could duplicate some of the plantings that we particularly liked. Good luck and don't forget to have fun!
Yeah, that's what I thought...blank canvas. But I am hearing a lot of grief about a certain 4 trees I put in when I moved here. Bad bad bad. Bradford Pear. Don't need to dwell on it more. Suffice to say I will have to remove them.....the jury has spoken. But after that it's a clean slate!
I love to drive through neighborhoods like you said. I made a binder of catalog pics of plants I like and will research each more online before creating my landscape.
Hope, I'm not mad about it. It's helped me make a better decision. But you know how Texans consider the mesquite tree? Yeah, well the Bradfords I put in are supposedly on the rise as invasive so I will be removing them this weekend! But it's great to have DG to reference this kinda stuff with others. So many other place's on the internet won't tell you the whole story.....Thanks for the welcome!
