Native Azalea?

Arlington, TX

Hi All
Someone told me that there is a native azalea. Not certain what the name is, I believe he said its common name has honeysuckle in it. Have you heard of this?
thank you and stay warm

Cynthia, I had also heard about a native azalea and googled for it. Didn't really find definitive info nor a source. Most of the ones I found for species in the Alabama area, seems to me. I will watch this thread as this interests me also.

I was told that they put on flowers before leaves and I think I heard that they grow in wooded areas. Sure wish I knew what I was talking about. I'll bet someone out there does!

Texas Azalea, Rhododendron oblongifolium.

Early Azalea, Rhododendron prinophyllum.

Wild Azalea, Rhododendron canescens.

Sone have pictures others not, but they are all Texas native, and some of them show where you can purchase them.
I hope that helps. Josephine.

Hi All - I bought what was called a native azalea at Cornelius Nursery on 1960 in Houston last year. (cause it was supposed to be yellow). Well yellow it was, but I needed my glasses to see the blooms!! Tiny little honeysuckle looking flowers, but they smell really great. I am sticking with my gaudy Formosa Azaleas from now on. Also have had 2 little "Gumpo" azaleas for 2 years. They didn't bloom last year, and if they don't this year, they are going into the compost pile. ---- come on spring!!!! jackie

thank you Frostweed, I tried to search but must have done it wrong. Still looking for an image on the web.

Jackie,
I'll bet that's the one I was told about. He said something like honeysuckle azalea. Does yours only bloom once? Would you plant it again?

Here's hoping that winter is done for the year

Hello Cynthia, I went and added the links to those Azaleas in my first post so you can see them on the plant files.
Please click on the links and you will see them.

My gardener put in a Wakebiseiu *sp* and it is quite happy unless it is overgrown by bicolor iris'

Thanks again, Frostweed

All I can say is Wow! 10-12 feet tall and fragrant. Wouldn't you love to walk through that forest?

Cynthia, mine only blooms in the spring, and no, I wouldn't plant it again. I like my azaleas so bright they must be viewed with sunglasses ( : did I say that??? Vossner probably agrees ( :

How about these? Sure hope we get this show again, I have the inside of a hedge lines in the standard once bloomers with encores in front of them.

Last summer we removed the old ligustrums in front of the house and planted Encore Monarchs with Encore Angel in front of those and an Ember because I liked it so much. I'm an azalea convert, thought they were a lot of trouble but I got lucky and they are easier for me than a Knock-out rose!

Glad to know I'm not missing anything, a 10 ft tree just won't fit in my front yard.
