Chirita tamiana

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I still love this little one. It's very tolerant of underwatering and grows easily next to the AVs. Here are 4 planted in a 4 or 5 inch pot. (Old timers have seen these pics already.)

oh yeah, and this thread is a seed offer.

I have seeds of this for anyone who wants. It sows and grows easily - this pic is of what happens if you don't space out your seeds......

So here's the deal. This is a freebie offer - just send me a dmail with "tamiana" in the subject line and your address for sending the seeds.

But, if I've sent you seeds before and you haven't sown them yet, please sit this one out. (If you sowed them and they didn't do anything, I'll be absolutely delighted to send you some of these.)

you have d-mail

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I'm glad to see some interest in these. For those who have sent me dmail already, seeds will go out in the mail tomorrow.

I have a few more pods ripening, so if anyone else wants some, please follow the bold text above. It may be a few more weeks but I'll send you some.

A reminder on seed sowing. I really recommend sterilizing the potting mix and then keeping the pots in a sealed container or ziploc bag until they sprout. Remember, use a light mix, moist (not sopping wet), warm temps, light, surface sow..... Someone asked if these can be propagated by leaf. Yes they can, although I've never tried it. (They sow so easily from seed.)

I bet you folks in Florida could put some in a pot in the shade and let them do their thing. They seem to be pretty indestructible and not heat sensitive as far as I can tell.

You've got mail.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks Keyring :)
Now I have a question..Do you think we should cover them in FL? it is pretty humid here year round, even inside :)
And how long does it usually take for these guys to sprout?

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Hi everyone.

Sounds like the seeds are arriving at their destinations... thank you for letting me know.

Never having lived in Florida, I'm not sure if you should cover them..... but when I sow seeds in summer (when my apartment is air-conditioning-less with humidity WAY up there (paper feels damp) I still bag my seeds.... It's not just to keep the air humid, but also to isolate them so that mold and stuff don't take over.

But people growing in natural light should use vented containers (not sealed baggies like I use) so that the temp doesn't get too hot.

The rest of the seeds should be going out in the next couple of days.

Happy sowing.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I got mine this week :) thanks so much! I am going to plant them this weekend.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I planted mine yesterday - let's see what happens. Boy were they tiny!

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I tried wetting a toothpick and a spyglass to plant mine and dated them to see If I have any luck..I sowed them with love so that just might do the trick for me..I will let everyone know how they do,and I hope everyone else will too..

Loretta...

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

is there a trick when planting such small seed? Other than what Loretta mention above?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I also got mine just before I left, I'll plant when I get home. BIG thank you Key!
cant wait!
p.s. saw some very BIG chirita today and Kohleria that would knock your socks off!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I finally gave up on all the tricks to sowing them spaced out and all.... I just put a few (as few as possible) on the palm of one hand, and then use a finger to nudge them off my palm and onto the soil.....

In case anyone missed it above, I'm going to copy what I said earlier and bold it - apologies for being so obnoxious!

I wish I had more room for Kohlerias - really do like them.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I just gotta learn how not to look at my tray of seeds now..I just sowed them a few hours ago and keep peeking at them..You better believe with my first sprout I'll be here doing the happy dance.. ;o))

Loretta..

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

LOL - I thought I was the only one who did that!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Key, aside from sterilizing my mix, can I try them like I did my strep seeds, that sure worked for me.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

yup, you can treat them the same. I sow all my gessie seeds the same way and I've only had difficulty with one (napeanthus)
