big cutting experience

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Here's a cutting that I cut off right above the ground and tried rooting in the bubbler. It rooted well and I see a couple of leaves but above the leaves it appears that it dried out. It was about 41/2 foot tall. It is about 2 feet where the leaves started forming. Above the y it looks dead but I will wait and see.

How come you don't take a pic of your bubbler system and share it with the rest of us??...Jeanne

Hi Jeanne, I will try to get a picture sometime today. Hey they are so simple to set up and inexpensive also.

How long did it take for the roots to form ?

I too have this happen, the top dries up. I just feel grateful that I got some leaves; but I was hoping for a tall standard. Sometimes we have to be grateful for what we get!! At least we still have life! I had quite a few cuttings that I cut long cuttings, including a Y, they dried up below the Y, which would have been nicer; but at least , they are still alive!

I think if you fine mist your tops a lot it may help that. I also keep my big cuttings in total shade till they root. Less stress. The roots or the lack of roots just can't support the top so you must think of ways to reduce its energy need till it roots enough to feed all parts. That is why I take off almost all the leaves on my cuttings, I just leave the tiny new growth. And if has Yed, I take it back to a few nodes on each part of the Y. NOT BELOW THE Y. It soon makes up for the cutback with fast growth once it is rooted well.

I would love to see your bubbler system!
