ravelers palms

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

I have a couple of Huge Travelers Palms about 30 Feet or higher with lots of shoots( about 2-5 feet)around the base. is it possible to remove these safely to replant somewhere else and how would I go about it.. got My licuala mapu recently and since doing research on line for its care I now have a new appreciation for palms. I think like a lot of people in Florida we just take them for granted. unfortunately we see the same ones repeated all over so they tend not to grab the eye. Im hoping to change that in my new garden. i just got another Baby Triangle palm today. For me they are much more interesting when they are smaller at eye level. I think I have another plant addiction to add to my Vireyas.

I have never been successful in getting the shoots from the traveller's palms out of the ground with roots intact. It requires deep digging and a sharp blade like a machete to separate it from the mother tree.
I have a huge one too and just chop off the little ones when they come up.

What a pity, they are such a good screen from neighbours, I love the strong geometrical shape. I'll wait till i see a new small one and give it a try. Is it like separating a bromiliad with one strong root attached.

Oh Neil, I am hoping to add Vireyas to my love lust repertoire. I need ones that can withstand some temps down to 30 for a few hours. Light frost. I have NONE but hope to order some on line as soon as spring is here, so soon.

Do you mind sharing some pics of yours and some of your expertise?

Know of any that have repeat blooming, gaudy flowers and that are big??
