I'm not sure what you all call this in your area, but the black nobbie thing that form on corn seem to be unstopable in my area. Do I just forget about trying to grow corn, or is there away to grow healthy corn?
Corn and Smut Question
I don't have much of it on my main corn...Ambrosia bi-color.
Below is a link about corn smut fungus.

Man!!!
I thought this thread was about something entirely different!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL
BB,
Yes, I had to be careful typing in corn smut on google as it was close to porn smut.
I must admit, my first thought was woody harrelson's great line from the govt vs larry flint movie, "hey, we are back in the smut business"....must be the waning gibbous moon effect, huh?
yep Indy--just takes one small "typo" huh? Gosh, I've been on the computer MUCH too long today.....

In Mexico corn smut is known as huitlacoche. it's considered a delicacy- like truffles . There may be different types of corn smut, but then you may be on to a very profitable crop there. Check into it, I dare you!
I got this and a lot of other info from a Google search. There's a lot of info out there.

More than likely is it huitlacoche. If I could get the huitlacoche, I would grow the corn just for that reason. Huitlacoche is awesome in quesadillas. I don't think there is anything better for a quesadilla other than the cheese. I have never been able to get it fresh. I always have to buy it canned.
Well maybe I will plant some corn this year. Guess I need to find out how to harvest this Huitlacoche. We have a very large population of hispanics in the area that probably would like to buy some. Maybe I could sell it at the farmers market along with our eggs and drought tolerant plants I hope to grow. Cool!
