Moretz....are you looking for plants for "in" the pond water, or around the pond, more 'bog-like". There are green and white variegated iris, that look good even if they don't bloom. There are several cannas with colored variegated leaves that can handle some boggy type areas. I have plants in and around my pond, it's amazing some of the things that you find out grow in water. I put some barerooted purple ruffle colocasia in the water (about 8 inches deep) and it just continued to grow. Someone said colocasias are poisonus to fish, but I have 2 different varieties in my pond, and they've been there 3 years, and the fish are just fine and dandy. Black gamecock iris's are not variegated, but their dark black/purple color is beautiful.
Pink erebus canna grows well in the water too, doesn't get very tall, and has bright pink blooms.

Try to trade for some plants...they are so expensive at the water garden stores and some of them grow quickly. of course...most folks will have only dormant plants right now...you might do better in a few more weeks...

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

thxs to both of you, i would love to rtade if anyone has any to trade when it gets warmer, i will be gone a f ew days my daughter woke up with the flu so i am going to worry about her and then my pond but thxs

Hi all you pond plant experts !
I have read that the large Elephant Ears will grow in standing water. Has anyone tried this in their bog or pond area... I would love to attempt this if it is even feasible

I think this is a perfect time to buy pond plants. Go to one that is open for business and the plants all look pretty bad. Prices should be lower now because of this.

Course I'm a sucker for anything because I KNOW what they will look like out of dormancy.

Last week I put in another pond and found a pond lady. She gave me a whole bag of anacris and hornwort. I needed those badly for oxygenation. I also got a hardy lily for $25. Last lily I bought in Lauderdale cost me 50.

Moretz, when your daughter is better, let's see if I have some variegated stuff you might could use in your pond.

SJ, there are a lot of EE's that like to get their feet wet. I believe Black Majic is one. Although right now all my ears are dormant so I can't tell one from the other.

SJBenton....I have EE's in my pond, barerooted, with just gravel and rocks propping them up. They do very well. I have Black Magic, black ruffles, and violet stemmed (with green leaves) All have been there for 2 years and they are fine. I think they are more prolific growers when in the ground, but I don't really want them to take over in my pond, so I'm ok with them only throwing a few runners here and there.

For me...some of the EE's will grow in the pond but they do much better in the soil...so I grow them near but not in the pond...some folks may have great success with them though :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Beware of EE's barerooted in a rock pond! I had one start to displace my side walls, and decided to pull them out. Here is a picture of one plant.

Hi Sheila - Did that growth for the EE happen in one season? EE's are a tropical here, and don't last the winter - I'd sure like to try in the pond, but sure don't want to damage the liner - Dax

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I've never experienced it but you would be amazed at some of the things roots can do.

Dax...try your EE's in a larger pot and that would protect your liner.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Guess you noticed my foot and the floating alligator for comparison? LOL! That was the second year when we were noticing our lights had worked loose. I got in the pond and found out it was because of the roots disloging rocks. So out they came. I love the look of EE's in my pond, so I put them in a large pot last year, and pull it up occasionally and trim the roots and the runners. It didn't get as big that way. Here they all die back but we warm up a lot quicker and have a longer growing period than in IA, guess that is the difference.

Back on topic for varigated items I love my sweet flag (foreground in pic). It is a slow grower and easy to move or break apart and start another bunch. Down here it is evergreen in my pond as is horsetail rush.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Moretz, is your pond ready for plants now? I have some umbrella plants, soft rush, parrot feather. None of these are variegated, sorry. I have something else out there that is a little special, let me check out the name on it and let you know.

As for my wish list, I haven't really got one. I do, however have a new place with 5 acres to plant on.

Let's see, maybe some kind of wood/forest ferns that would like growing under the pines by the long curveydriveway, or any other shade, drought tolerant type plants for that area.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Moretz,

Any old ferns will do since I want them for my "forest", as long as they will survive the transplant and shipment.

When would you like to have the pond plants sent up? Please let me know. If it gets cold, you could probably just keep the plants in a bucket of water in the garage. Are you in the exchange? I am.
