Sturt's Desert Rose
Gossypium sturtianum
First flower on Sturt's Desert Rose in my garden in Victoria, Australia, February 2006
Sturt's Desert Rose (Gossypium sturtianum)
I haven't come across this particular plant, it looks so much like a Hibiscus! The leaves remind me of some of the Eucalyptus in texture and colour too, from what I can see anyway! Sturt's Desert Pea is the only 'Sturt' I have known, interesting, must do some research, my curiosity has got the better of me!
This plant is in the same genus as Cotton, which is Gossypium herbaceum and is closely related to the Hibiscuses. It is a plant of the hot dry interior of Australia and is the floral emblem of the Northern Territory.
Thanks for that, my flower recognition was close then! (Easy?) I always knew the floral emblems of most States, perhaps the Nthn. Territory wasn't considered as it's not a State. Strange to see the 'survival' leaves combined with this type of flower, an interesting mixture, and very pretty at that!
Beautiful! It does look alot like a hibiscus.
