MS Works Calendar Categories Button

I just started using Works Calendar. When I make an appointment the option of choosing a category is dimmed. I am guessing it has something to do with administratorial (is that a word?) power. Unfortunately I am the only administrator this computer has got but I can't figure out how to make it work. :^(
