Hey they actually mentioned snow flurries for here. I left Chicago as a teen hoping to never have to see snow again. Yuk. Don't know how the northerners can handle it all winter. Just a few days depresses me. Where is my Sun! LOL

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

jan...gosh..don't think you have to worry...but we will break all records for here....and with the wind chill....yikes.....it DOES take several hours of a freeze to do real damage..but we're in for a rough 2 days.....i never cover things outside...so we'll see...just picked the 1/2 bushes of citrus yesterday and much more on tree...hmmmm...lots of thinking to do at this end...lol

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

We are predicted to drop to the low/middle 30's Mon & Tues am and then warm again.
I will definitely cover the more tender things to be on the same side. I collect old sheets and blankets during the warm months and store them for these occasions.
Jan...

It's a balmy 32 here (feels like 25) with a predicted high of a whopping 35! I think I'll just stay inside today! LOL We're supposed to continue getting snow through tonight, and might even have accumulation of an inch. I know that's nothing to you northerners, but we haven't had any snow in 2 or 3 years, so it's a big deal around here. There's an unwritten rule around here that you MUST visit a grocery store and aid in emptying the shelves of bread and milk if the "S" word is even mentioned. I think it's a ploy by the bakeries and dairies! LOL

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Heck,
Did I say they mentioned light snow flurries down here? Haven't see that in awhile.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

rain..lol...i saw the snow im memphis the other day on tv...or was that nashville..forget....lol...the sun is trying to peek through here..but it FEELS so cold..with the wind chill....i'm near the ocean so hoping for a few warmer degrees in the next two mornings....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Bob, if there's anything you can't manage to bring inside or cover, go out before sunrise and wet them down with a spray from the hose. I've been told that a lot of the damage from frost isn't from the cold as such, it's from the sun refracting through the ice crystals and burning the surface of the plant... so if you wash off the frost, you can reduce or eliminate the damage. I've done this with tomato & pepper plants, and it seems to work. I wouldn't suggest relying on this method entirely, but as I said, it's worth a try for protecting any plants you aren't able to shelter otherwise.

BTW, we've got about 8 inches of snow here... it's really gorgeous, outlining all the trees... even the empty pots etc strewn about on the back deck suddenly look beautiful & decorative, LOL!

hope you're doing ok down there. Like critter said, we finally got some winter this weekend - it's been an ultra-warm one so far.

The green thing on my balc is Helleborus foetidus, which was just putting out buds

jill yes it is true....the watering..misting...of plants is a great insulator...i am hoping that being so close to the ocean..we may be a bit warmer....the worse hours are 4 to 7am...key ..that is beautiful in one sense i am sure....i am hoping that my mango blossoms somehow survive...i'm leaving most of it in Father Nature's hands.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm sure Dad will take care of you guys down there...Mom's up here having a fit!!! 12-24" of snow!!!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm such a big ninny. I can't take snow or cold. I keep our wood stove cooking all day in the winter. And I'm one of those people who don't like to pile on lots of clothes (I was a royal pain as a child - complaining that the wool itched and the seams were scratching me - yea high maintenance!)

My preferred attire is a t-shirt and shorts or sarong (in Maui of course) and flip flops. Snow... can't wear my preferred attire in that.

hope Florida warms up for my visit in a few weeks.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

laurie..you will be in heaven..it will be in the 80's when you're here..and by the way...i still have my shorts on and it's cold

brrrr - it finally stopped snowing up here. I'm not sure what the final totals are yet. At least 15", but I suspect more. Central Park got over 20"

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

anita..saw the central park...think about 26inches....we may be just a tad warmer in morning...hoping so

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Hehe we just battened down the hatches for the cold weather *shiver*

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

well this weather is very costly to the nurseries above me..especially the hermman nursery we have talked so much about....(with the lipstick plants..ANGEL EXOTICS)...THEY will be up all night with smudge pots...etc...keeping everything from freezing...the fern nurseries really have it hard...and i fear that i will lose my mango blossoms here....a rough 2 days ahead
