Just received myTai Pink Profusion rhizomes from a pleasant and informative gentleman in FL. Just thought I'd let you all know. This is my first go around with these beautiful plants but he seems to have a great selection at very reasonable prices. If you do order, tell Jim Chantell sent you his way. :) Here's his website for ref.: www.plantationgardens.com
So glad to have found this forum - wonderful to learn from you all that know more about these plants!
Wonderful Ginger grower in FL
I am so excited! This is just what I have been looking for.I printed out everything and will decide what to order today and send it tomarrow.
I used to grow all kinds of gingers when I lived in South Florida but can only grow the Hedychiums in this zone. What a great choice he has.
I will tell him that Jim Chantell sent me.
Nancy
I ordered some of the new Tai hybrids he has..
I just heard about him in GW and placed an order for two in thai series, Pink Profussion and Sunlight. He was helpful, I thought prices were good. I didn't post earlier because I haven't actually received the rhizomes. I picked those because they only grow to 4-5 ft. He said Sunlight was most fragrant. Can't wait!
But here is my 2 cents, for other ginger lovers.
edited to correct varieties

Glad I could help you all out - I can't wait till summer to see these beauties!!! Any helpful hints from those of you that have grown them - PLEASE send my way. :) Jim really seems to be just such a sweet wealth of information. NOTE: your first email will be "kicked back" just follow the directions to be "added to his list" of ok email addresses. My order arrived within 5 days of his receiving it - so he's timely with orders as well as email responses.
Nancy - you know more then I, I'm sure, but Jim also mentioned that the Curcuma's do alright up in our direction - double check with him on that.
Hopefully everyone will be able to post pics come summer time!!
vossner - glad to hear you placed an order. I posted his info on GW prior to realizing that, that is apparently a "no-no" over there...personally I don't see the big deal. I think it's good for folks to share experiences/info w/decent businesses. Helps everyone that way.
maybe it was you that sent me an email! I had posted my interest in pink gingers. If so, small world. If so, glad you are over here. If so, thanks again!
I emailed him asking if I could grow other gingers here.He answered that everything he has can be grown in zone 8.
I have read conflicting info in tropical gardening books but since his prices are so good,I'm going to try.

Nancy - yeah for you! I keep my fingers crossed for you...how cool to be able to be surrounded by those things you love...even AFTER moving north!!! Sadly I'm more limited - being in zone 7. We'll have to compare notes.
It was Christmas in Feb. as I received my package from Jim Scoggins of Plantation Gardens. The rhizomes are simply wonderful. He wrote me a detailed letter on planting and care instructions. I am gonna keep them in a cool, dark place until mid March, then I will plant in a shaded area.
As if this weren't enough, he sent me 6 complimentary curcuma petiolata rhizomes. So wonderfully unexpected-- and I have just the place for these beauties.
It was Christmas in Feb. today!
Vossner - great to get those little "extras" eh? I couldn't wait...planted min in huge pots by my window to get a little head start on the season - definately agree, Christmas in Feb.!!!
hey y'all I just noticed Plantation Gardens is in the GWD. Be sure and post your experience with this vendor.
vossner - help please...what is the GWD?
garden watchdog. go to the top of your screen and click on the gardenwatchdog tab. then type in plantation gardens and voila. holler if you need more help
vossner...thank you...went and did
Vossner, that message over at GW was from me (aka kayinms).
I'm glad you picked up on it. Plantation Gardens is the best place I know of for gingers.
Chantell, I don't think GW has a problem with recommending nurseries by name. I think Spike's problem is mentioning his competition. He's stricter about it than most forums are, but I think it's just his way of keeping out problems.
Kay
Gaylams, thanks so much for the tip!
Kay,
Good to know...honestly though since signing up here...I've not been back over to GW lately. Either way good to know for reference the "do's and don'ts" - thank you. Also glad to hear you think highly of Plantation Gardens...I actually came on it while surfing the net. After I'd placed my order I thought...geez I should've done some checking before just popping a payment in the mail. Honestly though...you just get a "good feeling" in emails from him. What a really nice guy. Can't wait to see these guys when they start popping up above the soil!!! My first time with gingers. :)
Chantell
You're gonna love 'em!
I placed an order with Jim right after Christmas as he can sell out of some his varieties. He is holding them to be mailed after it warm enough to do so safely. I can't wait to get my new Tai series Hedychiums!!!
Gingers have such a "wow factor" and are so easy to grow that most folks are hooked once they start.
Vossner,
Any of your gingers coming up from Jim yet? I can't remember how long they're suppose to take before "surfacing." LOL Mine are in huge pots in an east window...waiting for the outside temps to cooperate with being put into the ground.
Thanks,
Chantell
C, I don't expect to see any action before april. soil not warm enough for them yet. A'l I've seen so far is a tiny seedling of ee Lime zinger and some ee Illustris.
Vossner,
Thanks....I just wanted to make sure I hadn't messed up some how. I thought with them being inside that they'd starting popping up...I'll be patient.
Chantell
Happy to report ALL three of the Tai Pink Profusion rhizomes I received are starting to come up now...yipeee! 2 of 3 of my Butterfly gingers are 6-8 in above soil. I can't wait till they can be moved outside but not rushing that as our temps have been anything but stable!! I've already made room for them in the flower bed (read: removed Spreading Yew bushes LOL)
yikes, here it is the 16th and none of mine are peeking out yet.
I planted mine 2 weeks ago and just one is peaking out.We had a heat wave this past weekend, temps in the high 80's going back to the 70's this week.I hope the high temps will help and I'll see some action soon.
My Dr.Moy from last year has 4 canes.
vossner - they've been in an east windown since planting - plenty of sun and warmth...maybe that's what did it.
downscale - WOW!!! That's incredible...gotta love the heat to bring the babies up, eh?
Update! Most of the rhizomes are up.I inspected 2 that were not showing any growth and saw that I had planted them wrong side up.The cane was coming out of the bottom. That is what was taking it such a long time.
Good for you...I did the same with one rhizome that was a "no show" while the other 2 were inches above the soil. He was there...and starting...just taking his time a bit, I guess. :)
